University of California, San Diego
UCSD offers degree emphases in composition (MA, PhD), performance (MA, DMA), computer music (MA, PhD), and critical studies/experimental practices (MA, PhD). The department is dedicated to contemporary music-making and encourages collaboration among composers, performers, and researchers. Numerous ensemble and performance opportunities, symphony orchestra, colloquia, distinguished visitors, and state-of-the-art electronic and computer facilities.

Theater

Southern Illinois University Carbondale
The Department of Theatre at Southern Illinois University Carbondale blends scholarship and practice in an academically based experience. The course work establishes a solid theoretical framework enhanced by a production season ensuring that students write, direct, and design as much as possible so they graduate with a full resume of experience and expertise in their areas of study. Faculty members bridge the academic and professional world by regularly working in professional theaters, writing articles and books and presenting at national and international conferences. The department maintains a newly renovated 520-seat proscenium theater and a flexible studio theater for productions.

Tufts University
The department concentrates on theater and performance history and dramatic literature and criticism. First-year fellowships, assistantships, and research/travel stipends are available. Students have access to the Harvard Theatre Collection. There are opportunities as assistant directors and dramaturges on faculty-directed productions. Students regularly win scholarly awards and present papers at academic conferences. The program fosters close relationships between students and faculty members.

University of Hawaii at Manoa
Hawaii offers exceptional programs that meld Western and Asian theater and dance. Includes research and performance in a multiracial environment; faculty of international repute; guest artists, teachers. 2008–09: Japanese Noh; 2009–10: Chinese Jingju. Study Western and Asian acting, design, directing, history, literature, contemporary theory, dance, youth theater, playwriting. PhD in Asian, Western, and comparative Asian-Western theater. Occasional touring.

Villanova University
Graduate offerings include the 36-credit MA in theater and the 15-credit certificate in practical theater. Scholarly and creative studies in dramaturgy, script analysis, acting, directing, playwriting, solo performance, and scenography are supplemented with hands-on production work with professional directors and designers. Four professional-caliber productions are presented annually on the award-winning main stage. Acting scholarships and paid production assistantships are available.
