The MA in history gives special attention to teacher preparation, including the area of world history. Most students holding teaching assistantships are required to do grading and teach discussion sessions. In addition, students attend a weeklong teacher-training session before classes start in the fall and take a 1-hour practicum in teaching the first year they hold an assistantship. This preparation gives graduates a competitive edge in the job search.

In the 2000 National Doctoral Program Survey, which ranks the nation's 50-plus full history programs based on student satisfaction, the Stony Brook Department of History tied for first place. Department faculty also ranked 4th nationally in a 2000 survey of historians' publication impact and prestigious awards.
