Comparative Literature

University of Utah
Degrees offered include MA in comparative literary and cultural studies (CLCS); MA and MALP in French, German, and Spanish; MA in world languages with licensure (WLMA); PhD in CLCS, German, and Spanish. The programs train students in literary critical analysis, cultural studies, linguistics, and in recent innovations in L2 (second language) pedagogy.

Small, highly selective doctoral program oriented toward research. Departmental strengths include medieval, early modern, American, Victorian, cultural history, and critical theory. Close contact with senior faculty members; closely supervised teaching. Doctoral students are supported by fellowships and teaching assistantships for 5 academic years and 4 summers. Southern Illinois University Carbondale
The department is active and vital, with strong programs in creative writing, literary and cultural studies, and rhetoric and composition. Whatever one’s interest, as a student or a potential colleague, there is much to explore in Carbondale. The Crab Orchard Review is Carbondale's nationally recognized literary magazine.

University of Delaware
MA students receive stipends and tuition scholarship for two years; PhD students, for three years. Minimum stipend in 2008–09 is $14,600, plus full tuition. Approximately 12 new awards annually. Fellowships. Excellent range of TA assignments: writing center, instruction, research, editorial, and special collections positions. Rich teaching opportunities, including literature courses in the student's field of specialization.

University of Pittsburgh
Graduate programs stimulate work across literary history, critical and cultural theory, composition, film, and creative writing. MA and PhD courses articulate theoretical issues through historical investigations of discursive practices ranging from canonical British and American literature to film and student writing. Special attention to social conditions of literary and critical writing, pedagogical practices, and the interrelationships of reading and writing, film and literature, and critical theory, composition, and literary study. MFA offers specializations in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction; includes training in criticism and theory; final manuscript of professional quality.
