BIOLOGICAL AND BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES

Biological and Biomedical Sciences--General

McGill University
Program emphasis for the MSc and PhD degrees is on development of the intellectual and technical skills necessary for independent research. The department is very well equipped for graduate training and research in all areas, and its resources are greatly extended by affiliation with other research organizations, institutes, and hospitals.

Midwestern University, Downers Grove Campus
Midwestern University is committed to educating the health-care team of the new century. The University operates campuses in Downers Grove, IL, and in Glendale, AZ. The Biomedical Science Program offers Master of Biomedical Sciences (MBS) degrees at both Downers Grove and Glendale. The program is designed for students interested in biotechnology, biomedical research, and the pharmaceutical industry. Successful students are also competitive candidates for admission to postbaccalaureate professional schools in the health sciences. Contact: Office of Admissions, 800-458-6253 (Downers Grove), 888-247-9277 (Glendale); e-mail: admissil@midwestern.edu (Downers Grove), admissaz@midwestern.edu (Glendale). Web site: http://www.midwestern.edu.

San Diego State University
The department offers MS degrees in biology, earned by thesis, with concentrations in ecology, microbiology, molecular biology, physiology, and evolutionary biology. It also has PhD programs in ecology (jointly with University of California, Davis) and in cell/molecular biology (jointly with University of California, San Diego). Teaching assistantships start at $11,688 per year for master’s degree students; stipends for PhD students are $16,836 (ecology) and $21,840 (cell/molecular biology). For applications and additional information, contact Graduate Coordinator, Biology Department, San Diego State University, San Diego, CA 92182-4614 (phone: 619-594-6919, fax: 619-594-5676, e-mail: stalley@sciences.sdsu.edu).

Stony Brook University, State University of New York
The purpose of the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) is to train academic medical scientists for both research and teaching in medical schools and research institutions. Students in this program will be equipped to study major medical problems at the basic level and, at the same time, recognize the clinical significance of their pursuits and discoveries. Interested candidates should complete the MSTP Application of Interest and submit it along with the general application materials for the School of Medicine. MSTP applicants may be invited for additional interviews with the MSTP Committee on Admissions. The MSTP is a fully funded program. The M.D. with Recognition in Research is a partially funded program of supervised research completed within the four years of medical training. No further application is required at this time. Students indicate their interest in this program and are eligible in the spring of their first year.

Cross-Discipline Announcements

Florida Institute of Technology
Program awards the MS and PhD in biological oceanography, chemical oceanography, geological oceanography, and physical oceanography and the MS in coastal zone management. Part of the Department of Marine and Environmental Systems in the College of Engineering. For additional information, visit the Web site at www.fit.edu/AcadRes/dmes/.

University of Pittsburgh
In the department's graduate program in molecular, cellular, and developmental biology, faculty research programs use prokaryotic and eukaryotic experimental systems and molecular and genetic approaches to understand the structure and function of genes and proteins, macromolecular interactions, cell-specific gene regulation, regulation of cell proliferation, and embryogenesis.
