PHYSICS
Applied Physics
Southern Illinois University Carbondale This program provides many research opportunities within the department, and a low student-faculty ratio allows students to work closely with faculty members. Areas of research include experimental (IR spectroscopy, thin films, magnetism, gas adsorption, ellipsometry), theoretical (condensed-matter theory, statistical physics, quantum computing, simulation of materials), and applied physics (novel materials from agricultural byproducts, coal and coal ash composites, permanent magnetic materials, chemical nanosensors, gas storage, carbon nanotubes and nanotube composites, superhard coatings). Assistantships for the academic year are offered to every selected applicant.
Cross-Discipline Announcements
Dartmouth College Thayer School offers MS and PhD programs in applied sciences. The interdisciplinary character of the institution, modern laboratories, computing facilities, and active collaborations with other departments provide unique opportunities for study and research in space plasma physics, nonlinear optics, electromagnetism, molecular materials, image and signal processing, fluid mechanics, and oceanography.
Physics
Florida State University Extensive research opportunities exist in theoretical and experimental physics in the areas of atomic and molecular physics, condensed-matter, high-energy, and nuclear physics. This research makes use of extensive computers and instrumentation at the National High-Magnetic Field Laboratory at FSU. Each full-time graduate student has an assistantship.
Oregon State University Condensed matter research: transparent conductors, defects in semiconductors, magnetic anisotropy theory, magnetic semiconductors, superlattices, carbon nanotubes, biosensors. Optics research: nonlinear optics, surface physics, photonics, laser cooling and trapping, atomic interferometry, terahertz spectroscopy, ultrafast and single molecule spectroscopy. Computational physics: electromagnetism in composite media, nanostructured materials, magnetic anisotropy, aqueous interfaces and solutions. Teaching apprentice program for future college teachers.
University of California, Los Angeles Strong, broad research and graduate student programs in both experimental and theoretical physics: condensed matter, low temperature, plasma, astrophysics, biophysics, high energy, intermediate energy, nuclear physics. Sixty-eight faculty members, 148 graduate students; 20 PhDs per year. Strong research funding. Financial support for essentially all graduate students. Near ocean in attractive West Los Angeles.
