MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES
Applied Mathematics
Cornell University The Center for Applied Mathematics is an interdepartmental program with more than 80 faculty members. Students may pursue PhD studies over a broad range of the mathematical sciences and are admitted to the field from a variety of educational backgrounds with strong mathematical components. Students are normally awarded fellowships or teaching or research assistantships.
The University of Arizona The Interdisciplinary Program in Applied Mathematics at the University of Arizona offers outstanding research opportunities at the interface of applied mathematics and disciplines in the physical, biological, and engineering sciences. The program has achieved an excellent reputation for interdisciplinary graduate studies leading to MS and PhD degrees in applied mathematics.
University of Minnesota, Duluth The program prepares graduates for jobs in industry, government, and teaching, as well as for subsequent PhD studies. Computational facilities are excellent. Faculty research includes graph theory, combinatorics, number theory, scientific computation, dynamical systems, control theory, numerical methods, statistics, biostatistics, and probability.
Mathematics
Brandeis University Program directed primarily toward PhD in pure mathematics; an MA is also offered. Benefits from informality, flexibility, and warmth of small department and from intellectual vigor of faculty well known for research accomplishments. Brandeis-Harvard-MIT-Northeastern Colloquium and many seminars provide opportunities for contact with other Boston-area mathematicians. PhD students normally receive full-tuition scholarship and teaching assistantship or fellowship. Contact Professor Ira Gessel, Graduate Adviser, 781-736-3060. E-mail: gessel@brandeis.edu. The College at Brockport, State University of New York Flexible program leading to MA in mathematics. Three required courses in algebra, analysis, and statistics. Four additional elective courses in mathematics or computer science. The remaining three courses may be chosen from other departments, including education. Course selection may be designed for preparation for doctoral studies, careers in industry, as well as secondary and community college teaching. Courses for actuarial exam preparation are available. Directed or independent study courses and research opportunities are offered. A limited number of assistantships, which include a stipend of $6000 and a tuition waiver, are available. Students are also eligible for BMACS scholarships that offer at least $3000 per year.
Emory University The department offers a PhD program in mathematics. Research specialties include algebra, computational algebra, applied math, combinatorics, complex analysis, differential equations, differential geometry, graph theory, topology, numerical analysis, scientific computation, computational fluid dynamics, inverse problems, image processing, and mathematical physics. Full tuition and funding are available. For more information, visit www.mathcs.emory.edu/programs-grad.
Ohio University The Department of Mathematics offers graduate programs leading to PhD and master’s degrees in mathematics, including an MS option with a computational mathematics concentration. In addition to 25 regular faculty members with a history of excellence, flexibility, and accessibility to students, there are several visitors each year. Faculty research interests include algebra, analysis, applications of wavelets, biomathematics, coding theory, combinatorial optimization, differential equations, financial mathematics, mathematics education, numerical analysis, probability and statistics, and topology. Ties with applied sciences departments are being developed. Teaching assistantships and fellowships are available. Please visit www.math.ohiou.edu for additional information.
Southern Illinois University Carbondale The computational facilities provided by the Math Computer Lab have recently been updated with state-of-the-art computer hardware and software through a grant from the National Science Foundation. All graduate students have 24-hour access to the lab for work on class or research projects, theses, and dissertations.
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill The department, with 34 faculty members and 55–60 graduate students, offers special opportunities for student-faculty interaction in master's and doctoral programs. Faculty includes distinguished, active researchers in most subfields of mathematics, including a strong group in applied mathematics. Nearby resources are North Carolina State, Duke, and the Research Triangle Park.
University of Oklahoma The Graduate Mathematics Program at the University of Oklahoma offers students a supportive environment and the opportunity for individual interaction with faculty members involved in broadly diversified research programs. Flexible degree programs allow students to concentrate in pure mathematics, applied mathematics, or research in undergraduate mathematics curriculum and pedagogy. Web site: www.math.ou.edu/.
