Los Angeles is half an hour away and Pasadena is 30 miles to the north. Within 15 miles of the campus are the famous Redondo Beach and Long Beach. Hollywood, where Universal Studios and Warner Bros. Studios are located, is within a 30-minute drive. Disneyland, in Anaheim, California, is 45 minutes to an hour from the campus. San Diego is approximately 120 miles from Los Angeles, and Death Valley National Monument is 350 miles away. HISTORY Compton Community College is a state-supported, two-year, coed college founded in 1927. As a department of Compton-Union High School, it is one of the few four-year junior colleges in the nation that combines the eleventh and twelfth grades of high school with the first and second years of college. In 1963, it moved to its present location. Comptons mission is to help each student acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes essential to a productive life and personal well-being. The College offers students community service and cultural programs, technical and vocational programs, programs with business and industry, excellence in instruction, professional growth of faculty and staff, and more. Compton is a member of the American Council on Education. ACCREDITATION Compton Community College is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges to award the Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees. Certificates are also awarded.

Any person over 18 years of age who is a legal resident of California is eligible to attend Compton. A nonrefundable application fee of $11. ATHLETIC PROGRAMS Compton Community College is a member of the Southern California Conferences, Western State Conference (football), and the South Coast Conference (womens basketball). Students may get involved in writing or photography for the Tartar Shield, a weekly newspaper, or the News of Compton Community College, an information report published by the college every six months. Leadership opportunities are found in the Student Government Association. Special interest clubs are the African-American Student Union, Christian Club, International Student Organization, Latino-American Student Club, Disabled Student Association, and California Nurses Student Association. Alpha Gamma Sigma (Tau Chapter) honor society is represented on campus. The Greek society Phi Beta Lambda (Future Business Leaders of America) is also represented.
