HISTORY
Dillard University is a four-year, private, liberal arts, coeducational school created in 1930 by the merging of its two parent institutions, Straight University and Union Normal School.
In 1869, Straight University, later renamed Straight College, was established by the Congregational Church. Between 1874 and 1886 Straight operated a law department.
In 1869, Union Normal School was founded by the Methodist Episcopal Church. By the end of the century, Union was renamed New Orleans University. The University opened a medical department, including a school of pharmacy and a school of nursing, in 1889. The medical college was discontinued in 1911, but the hospital and nursing school continued under the name of Flint-Goodridge Hospital.
On June 6, 1930, Straight College and New Orleans University merged to form Dillard University, which continued to operate the Flint-Goodridge Hospital until 1983.
In 1935, Dillard University moved to its present location and began instruction. Dillard had the first speech department in a black university and the first nationally accredited nursing program in Louisiana.
The campus is situated on approximately 48 acres in a lovely residential section of New Orleans. The nineteen-building campus consists of stately, white, turn-of-the-century architecture and has been cited as one of the nations most beautiful campuses. This historically black college is a member school of the United Negro College Fund.
