HISTORY
Edward Waters College (EWC) is a four-year, liberal arts, coeducational college affiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. It was founded in 1866 as Brown Theological Institution for the training of African American clergy in the AME Church. In 1870, the name changed to Brown Theological Institute, which was chartered in 1872. Two years later the name changed to Brown University.
From 1874 to 1883, the school witnessed financial difficulty, had a series of name changes, and moved to a new location. In 1883, the school reopened as East Florida Conference High School in Jacksonville. To more accurately reflect program changes, the name was changed to Edward Waters College in 1892.
Edward Waters College has a history of survival despite hardships. In 1904, the school was hit by the disastrous fire that destroyed most of Jacksonville. After several years in rented quarters, the school acquired the site that it now occupies. The 21-acre campus is situated on both sides of Kings Road in the eastern section of Jacksonville. The campus facilities are a mixture of historic and modern buildings.
The college holds dual distinction as Floridas oldest independent institution of higher learning and the first institution established for the education of African Americans in the state. President Robert Mitchell said, Our ultimate goal is to return the college to its rightful place in the collegiate realm and as a center of African American culture on the first coast of Florida. The college became the forty-third member of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) in 1985.
