HISTORY

Fisk University is a four-year, private, liberal arts, coed institution affiliated with the United Church of Christ. The school was founded in 1866 as Fisk School. In 1871, Fisk began offering instruction at the college level, and in 1875, it offered its first bachelor’s degree. In 1967, it became the first black institution to be awarded university status and thus became Fisk University. It was also the first black institution to be accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

The University is known for its famous Jubilee Singers, who began to perform nationally and internationally in 1876 to bring needed money to the school. The Jubilee Singers have performed at the White House, the World Peace Conference, and before Queen Victoria and Kaiser Wilhelm of Europe. In 1976, Jubilee Hall, the first permanent building of higher education for southern blacks, was designated a national landmark. The Fisk campus was named as a national historic district in 1978 by the U.S. Department of Interior in recognition of its unique place in history, art, and culture.

In the late 1980s, Fisk began to receive large donations from well-known black citizens. Camille and Bill Cosby donated $1 million to the school in 1988. In 1990, Fisk received more than $1 million from Michael Jackson’s United Negro College Fund contributions.

Fisk’s twenty-eight-building campus, located on more than 40 acres, has a rich history and has educated such graduates as W. E. B. Dubois, John Hope Franklin, and Aaron Douglas. Fisk’s mission is to educate and prepare students so that they are resourceful and skilled to face the challenges of life in a technological society and an increasingly multicultural world.
