HISTORY Knoxville College is a private, four-year, coed, liberal arts college affiliated with the United Presbyterian Church. Founded in 1875 by Presbyterian missionaries, the College has its roots in the McKee School for Negro Youth, which began in 1863. The first postsecondary-level instruction was offered in 1877, and the first baccalaureate degree was awarded in 1883. Knoxville College is dedicated to the development of the first-generation college student. Its mission is to provide a stimulating and challenging educational experience to students who have been afforded little advantage in society. To this end, Knoxville College provides programs to prepare students for the jobs of today while also teaching them the skills necessary for the jobs of tomorrow. The College provides an experienced, caring faculty to achieve this goal, and it strongly believes in preserving and disseminating the African-American heritage. The main campus of Knoxville is located on 39 acres. Its seventeen-building campus continues to be the primary institution for minority students in east Tennessee. In 1989, Knoxville acquired the two-year Morristown College, which is now named Knoxville College-Morristown. This traditionally black college is a United Negro College Fund member school. ACCREDITATION Knoxville College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to award the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and associate degrees.
