Total Enrollment: 734 Level of Selectivity: Noncompetitive (moderately competitive for engineering, teacher education, and premedicine) Location: LeMoyne-Owen is located in Memphis, the largest city in Tennessee (with a population of approximately 80,000), giving students all the benefits of a large metropolitan city. Shopping centers, museums, fine restaurants, theaters, concerts, orchestra, horseback riding, golf, boating, and major league sports are all within easy access of the campus. Local public transportation (MATA) takes students to downtown Memphis; to the international airport, which is 10 miles away; and to the mass rail system, which is 5 miles away. The city is served by mass bus transportation. Graceland is within 30 minutes of the campus. Memphis was home to two famous singers: W. C. Handy, known as father of the blues, and Elvis Presley, the king of rock and roll. HISTORY LeMoyne-Owen College is a four-year, private, coed, liberal arts college founded in 1968 as the result of a merger between LeMoyne College and Owen College. The merged institutions bring together two religious affiliations, the United Church of Christ and the Tennessee Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention. LeMoyne College had its beginnings in 1862 when the American Missionary Association started an elementary school named Lincoln School for Negroes. The Lincoln chapel, which housed the school, was destroyed in a fire during the 1866 race riots. The chapel was quickly rebuilt and reopened in 1867. In 1871, the schools name changed to LeMoyne Normal and Commercial School after Dr. Francis J. LeMoyne donated a large sum of money when the school was in financial trouble. The College moved to its current site in 1914. Ten years later it became a junior college; in 1934, it became a four-year college. S. A. Owen Junior College opened in 1954. The school was named after Reverend S. A. Owen, a prominent religious and cultural leader. In 1956, its name changed to Owen College and it graduated its first class. LeMoyne-Owen College is where most of Memphis African-American leaders earned their undergraduate degrees, including Memphiss first African-American mayor, elected in 1991. The schools mission is to prepare students for leadership positions in the community through quality academic and student development programs. It is strongly committed to community outreach service to break the cycle of poverty in the African-American community. One of its community development projects is the adoption of the Garden Housing Development Project, which seeks to provide programs and services to resident children and their parents. Programs include the Big Brother/Big Sister mentoring program, after-school tutoring, a homework center, and a teen pregnancy prevention program for men. The nine-building campus is situated on 15 acres and ../includes the Little Theater and a state-of-the-art foreign language lab. The campus facilities comprise both modern and traditional buildings. LeMoyne-Owen is a United Negro College Fund (UNCF) member school. ACCREDITATION LeMoyne-Owen College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to award the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Masters degrees.
