Motto: Educating Our Students for the New World Order HISTORY Medgar Evers College (MEC) is a four-year, state-supported, coed, liberal arts college founded in 1969 in response to the desire of the community for a program of higher education for community residents of central Brooklyn. This resulted in the development of a Community Council to serve as an adviser to the College. The council is composed of representatives from community organizations, community residents, faculty members, students, and all elected officials. The school is named for slain freedom fighter Medgar Wiley Evers, who tirelessly fought for the civil rights of blacks in the Mississippi Delta area. Evers was only 38 when an assassin quieted his voice. However, founders of the school boast that Evers quest has not ended, for in the heart of Central Brooklyn stands Medgar Evers College, strong and surviving in its namesakes spirit. As one of seventeen members of the City University of New York (CUNY), Medgar Evers College is mandated to meet the educational and social needs of central Brooklyn. The Colleges mission is grounded in the belief that education is a right of all individuals in pursuit of self-actualization. To this end, the College provides high-quality, professional, career-oriented undergraduate degree programs in conjunction with liberal arts, educational, career, and personal goals. The two-building campus has two locations. The 1650 Bedford facility ../includes an auditorium, a lecture hall, a library, a learning center, a computer lab, classrooms, a canteen, several lounges, an amphitheater, and administrative offices.
