HISTORY
Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU) is a state-supported, four-year, coed, liberal arts college. Endorsed by the Mississippi Legislature in 1946, the Mississippi Vocational College opened in the summer of 1950 to train teachers for rural elementary schools and to provide vocational training. In 1964, the name of the institution was changed to Mississippi Valley State College to reflect the addition of a liberal arts and sciences curriculum. Ten years later, the governor of Mississippi granted university status to the school and, hence, the name changed to Mississippi Valley State University in 1974.
Mississippi Valleys mission is to serve all students: students who are accelerated, students with adequate college preparation, and students who require remediation. While the student population is from all over the country, the majority of students come from the predominantly black Mississippi Delta region.
The thirty-three-building campus is located on 450 acres, 1 mile northeast of Itta Bena. In addition to dorms, classrooms, and administrative buildings, thirty-two faculty homes and 127 modern apartments are on the campus. Many faculty members and their families, as well as the University president, live on campus. This school is one of the traditional black colleges and universities.
