Location: Morris Brown College is located in the metropolitan city of Atlanta, the capital of Georgia, with a population of more than 2 million. Transportation via mass air, rail, and bus serve the city. Local transportation on the MARTA provides easy access to downtown, the airport, or virtually anywhere in the metro area.
The campus is close to downtown and to Underground Atlanta, with its quaint shops. Students have access to fine dining, world-class shopping, art galleries, museums, and the Atlanta Symphony or Ballet. The Atlanta Hawks, Braves, and Falcons offer major league sports. Major recording artists frequent the city. Points of interest include the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Non-Violent Change, the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library, Stone Mountain Park, and Six Flags over Georgia Amusement Park. Other activities include boating, fishing, and golfing. The city of Atlanta is an international center for business, banking, and social change, offering students many professional opportunities.
HISTORY
Morris Brown College (MBC) is a four-year, private, coed, liberal arts institution affiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal Church. It was founded in 1881 “for the Christian education of Negro boys and girls in Atlanta.” Morris Brown opened with 2 teachers and 107 students in 1885; it is now an institution with 450 faculty and staff members and more than 2,000 students.
The school operated on the primary, secondary, and normal school levels until 1894, with a regular academic program and courses in tailoring, dressmaking, home economics, nursing education, commerce, and printing. A theological department for the training of ministers was established in 1894. That same year the College Department began, graduating its first students four years later.
Morris Brown College’s status was changed to university in 1913, and it was granted the right to establish and operate branch institutions of learning. The heavy burden imposed by the branches on the school’s finances made it necessary to discontinue the branches in 1929, when the present name, Morris Brown College, was restored.
The primary mission of Morris Brown is to provide educational opportunities in a Christian environment that enable students to become fully functional persons in society. In fulfilling this mission, the College accepts the obligation to place events and points of view in the context of man’s long intellectual history and to expose both to the light of man’s best thinking.
MBC became the fourth member of the Atlanta University Center, a cluster of six predominantly black colleges and universities, in 1932. It is also a United Negro College Fund member school.
ACCREDITATION
Morris Brown College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to award the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees.

Entrance Requirements: Graduation from an accredited high school (or equivalent) and completion of the following 15 Carnegie units, with 12 in academic subjects, including 4 English, 3 mathematics, 2 lab science, and 2-3 foreign language; official transcript; two letters of recommendation from high school personnel; a personal essay; and completed physical exam form. A $30 nonrefundable application fee is required.

Graduation Requirements: A minimum of 124 credit hours and completion of the core requirements, including the following hours: 6 mathematics, 6 science, 6 social science, and 6 foreign language; average grade of C or more or a GPA of at least 2.0; pass the English Qualifying Examination; complete at least one year in residence at MBC; and participate in all commencement exercises.

ATHLETIC PROGRAMS
Morris Brown College is a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

STUDENT LIFE
Campus Services: Legal, health clinic, and personal/psychological counseling.
Campus Activities: Social and cultural activities include theater, chorale, jazz ensemble, orchestra, dance, and band. Other activities include Black History Quiz Bowl, mock trials, and debates. Students may get involved in the Wolverine Observer (student-run newspaper) or the Brownite (yearbook).
Special events include the Athletic Awards Program, which recognizes student athletes who have distinguished themselves during the year. MBC’s choir, which is known nationally, performed at the inaugural ceremonies for Jimmy Carter as governor and president, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and the 200th anniversary of the U.S. Constitution in Philadelphia.
Leadership opportunities are found in the Student Government Association (SGA) or the more than thirty other organizations, such as the PKs (Preachers Kids), an organization for sons and daughters of ministers in any denomination who do creative outreach such as prison ministry or tutoring to homeless children. Greek sororities include Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta; fraternities include Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, and Phi Beta Sigma.
Many opportunities exist for students to interact with students at other Atlanta University Center Institutions, including Clark Atlanta University, Spelman College, Morehouse College, Interdenominational Theological Center, and Morehouse School of Medicine.
