Location: The campus is located on 1,440 acres in the small town of Prairie View, Texas, approximately 40 miles from Houston. This semirural campus is approximately 1 mile from a major highway and 40 miles from the airport. The campus can be accessed by bus. The city of Prairie View offers access to an assortment of restaurants, shopping centers, rodeo events, ethnic festivals, horseback riding, and water sports on the lake. Nearby Houston offers students an array of social and cultural activities.
HISTORY
Prairie View A&M University is a four-year, state-supported, coed college founded in 1876 as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas for Colored Youths. Prairie View opened in 1878, with eight black men who were the first blacks to enroll in a state-supported school in Texas. In 1889, the name of the school was changed to Prairie View State Normal and Industrial College. Prairie View State became authorized to offer a four-year degree in 1901. The first Bachelor of Science degrees were granted in 1903.
The 49th Texas Legislature changed the name of Prairie View Normal and Industrial College to Prairie View University in 1945. In 1947, the institution’s name was again changed, by the 50th Legislature, to Prairie View Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas. To more accurately reflect the scope of its programs, the name was changed to Prairie View Agricultural and Mechanical University in 1973.
Prairie View is the second-oldest institution of higher education in the state of Texas. In 1984, the mission of the University was redefined and Prairie View became one of three Texas universities designated by the Texas constitution as an “institution of first class,” with the intention that Prairie View A&M University would become nationally recognized in the areas of education and research. It was also designated as the “statewide special-purpose institution,” charged to provide special services to students from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Prairie View A&M is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to award the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and master’s degrees.

Entrance Requirements: Graduation from an accredited high school (or equivalent) with a 2.0 (conditional) GPA 2.5 (unconditional)(or equivalent); graduation in the upper 50 percent of the class. The following high school units: 4 English, 4 mathematics, 4 social sciences, 3 science, 2 foreign language, 1 computer science, and 4 electives. $25 application fee.

Prairie View is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA, Division I), IAA, and the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

STUDENT LIFE
Campus Regulations: All undergraduate students are encouraged to live in the residence halls.
Campus Services: Health center, counseling, remedial programs, student employment, career counseling and placement, and religious services, including chapel.
Campus Activities: Social and group activities include theater, band, chorale, orchestra, and dance. Performing artists and speakers from the public and private sector provide cultural enrichment. Students may get involved in the student-run newspaper or yearbook. Students interested in communications can get involved in the campus radio station (KPVU-FM).
Leadership opportunities can be found in the Student Government Association (SGA) or other student-run organizations. Greek sororities include Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta; fraternities include Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, and Phi Beta Sigma. More than 30 academic honor societies are represented on campus.
