HISTORY
Prairie View A&M University is a four-year, state-supported, coed college founded in 1876 as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas for Colored Youths. Prairie View opened in 1878, with eight black men who were the first blacks to enroll in a state-supported school in Texas. In 1889, the name of the school was changed to Prairie View State Normal and Industrial College. Prairie View State became authorized to offer a four-year degree in 1901. The first Bachelor of Science degrees were granted in 1903.
The 49th Texas Legislature changed the name of Prairie View Normal and Industrial College to Prairie View University in 1945. In 1947, the institutions name was again changed, by the 50th Legislature, to Prairie View Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas. To more accurately reflect the scope of its programs, the name was changed to Prairie View Agricultural and Mechanical University in 1973.
Prairie View is the second-oldest institution of higher education in the state of Texas. In 1984, the mission of the University was redefined and Prairie View became one of three Texas universities designated by the Texas constitution as an institution of first class, with the intention that Prairie View A&M University would become nationally recognized in the areas of education and research. It was also designated as the statewide special-purpose institution, charged to provide special services to students from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
