HISTORY

Roxbury Community College is a two-year, state-supported, coed, liberal arts institution that has the unique distinction of being the only college in New England to serve a primarily minority-based population. RCC has two campuses: the Boston Business School Campus and the Roxbury Crossing Campus.

The Boston Business School (BBS), founded in 1914, originally served as a technical training school for the city of Boston. In 1984, the school merged with RCC. It now offers certificate programs and associate degrees in accounting and office technology. The BBS campus is located on Commonwealth Street, a few blocks from Boston University.

The Roxbury Crossing Campus was founded in 1973. After being housed in temporary facilities for almost fifteen years, the main campus moved to its present location on Columbus Avenue. Facilities include modern labs, a greenhouse, a media complex, and music studios. The campus offers programs in liberal arts, business administration, health sciences, human service, and the technologies.

The College’s mission is to serve the higher education needs of minorities who have been historically deprived of access to higher education and who are newcomers to the Boston area and the United States. Its goal is to adequately prepare its students for a four-year college or for the workplace. RCC serves Boston and adjacent cities, concentrating on the inner-city neighborhoods of Roxbury, Mattapan, Dorchester, Jamaica Plain, the South End, Mission Hill, and Chinatown.

RCC’s two campuses are located on 12 acres. Facilities include classroom buildings, specialized laboratories, a learning resource center, a learning center, a day-care center, a 500-seat theater, and a music, dance, and art studio.
