Location: Stillman College is located in the suburbs of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, a small town of approximately 76,000 people. The city is served by major bus, rail, and air lines. The campus is within walking distance of downtown and approximately 45 minutes from Birmingham, the largest city in Alabama. Birmingham offers a rich history of the civil rights movement. Auto racing, thoroughbred racing, museums, theaters, and concerts are part of Birmingham, as well as the Iron Bowl and the All-American Bowl, two intercollegiate football events.
HISTORY
Stillman College is a four-year, coeducational, private college affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. Stillman began in 1876 as Tuscaloosa Institute, a school for the theological training of African-American ministers. In 1898, the school’s name changed to Stillman Institute and in 1948 it changed to Stillman College.
The educational focus of Stillman grew well beyond theology as other academic programs were added. In 1899, the general assembly approved the enrollment of women. In 1948, the school became a four-year, liberal arts institution, and it awarded its first bachelor’s degrees in 1951.
Proud of its history and its relationship to the Presbyterian Church, Stillman aims to utilize the best of its heritage as it moves into the future by providing an environment that is both Christian and intellectual. The College’s enrollment is small enough to permit personalized and individualized attention to students while providing a vast educational experience.
Stillman College’s fifteen-building campus spreads over 100 picturesque acres within the city of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Though Italian Renaissance architecture is predominant, most building interiors are completely renovated.
Stillman is committed to increasing the number of freshmen who complete their bachelor’s degrees within 5 years. The school received funding for two programs: Bell South Foundation provided $70,000 to enhance the freshman experience, and the United Negro College Fund and Lilly Endowment gave money to track students from recruitment to graduation, with a focus on retention. The College became a United Negro College Fund (UNCF) member school in 1963.
ACCREDITATION
Stillman College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees.

Open admissions. SAT or ACT must be on file.
Entrance Requirements: A high school diploma (or equivalent) with at least 15 units: 4 English, 1 mathematics, 1 science, 1 history, and 8 electives. Must have at least a C average in the courses noted above. A $25 nonrefundable application fee is required.

Graduation Requirements: Student must complete at least 124 semester hours to include 58 hours of core or general education requirements. Must have at least a 2.0 GPA in major area or 2.5 GPA for a teaching certificate. Students must pass tests in English, reading, and mathematics by sophomore year.

ATHLETIC PROGRAMS
Stillman College is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III.

STUDENT LIFE
Campus Regulations: Students must attend a four-day orientation. All cars must be registered. Documentation of two measles immunizations is required.
Campus Services: Health center, personal and psychological counseling, career planning and placement, and religious services, including chapel.
Campus Activities: Group and cultural activities include theater, band, concerts, chorale, and a lecture series. Students can get involved in the student-run newspaper (The Tiger’s Paw) or the yearbook (The Stillmanite). Leadership opportunities can be found in the Student Government Association, the Christian Student Association, or numerous college-wide committees. Greek sororities include Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta; fraternities include Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, and Phi Beta Sigma. Honor societies represented include Gamma Iota Sigma and Alpha Kappa Mu.
