HISTORY

Talladega College (TC) is a four-year, private, coed, liberal arts institution affiliated with the United Church of Christ. It was founded in 1867 by former slaves William Savery, Thomas Tarrant, and other freedmen from across the state who upheld the education of our children and youth as vital to the preservation of our liberties, and true religion as the foundation of all real virtue. It was the first college opened to blacks in the state of Alabama.

The College began in a one-room schoolhouse and later moved to Swayne Hall, formerly the Talladega Baptist Male High School, built by slaves as a primary school for white males. It was incorporated in 1869 and chartered in 1889. The first instruction at the postsecondary level was in 1890 and the first baccalaureate degree was awarded in 1895. Talladega College was, until 1916, the only institution in Alabama conferring college degrees without regard to race.

Talladega College’s mission is to foster leadership and instill in its graduates the values of morality, intellectual excellence, and hard work.

The seventeen-building campus is situated on 50 acres surrounded by 80 acres of gently rolling woodlands. Swayne Hall, the president’s home, and Savery Library are all historic landmarks. The Savery Library has the Amistad Mural printed on the wall that depicts the successful quest for freedom by captured Africans aboard the slave ship Amistad. This historically black college is a United Negro College Fund member school.
