HISTORY

Wiley College is a four-year, private, coeducational liberal arts and teaching college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Named for Bishop Isaac W. Wiley, the college was founded in 1873 as Wiley College and chartered in 1882 by the Freedmen’s Aid Society to provide educational opportunities for newly freed men. Wiley was first among black colleges west of the Mississippi River to be granted the "A" rating by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Wiley’s mission is to provide students with a liberal arts and career-oriented education in a close, Christian atmosphere. The college strives to promote excellence, command of language, power of inquiry, development of critical thinking, and search for values, with an emphasis on competition and innovation to enable students to effectively function in a pluralistic society. The college provides educational and cultural activities for the community by presenting concerts, lectures, and athletic events.

The College had its humble beginnings in two frame buildings just south of Marshall before it moved into six buildings in Marshall in 1880. Presently, the sixteen-building campus spans more than 63 acres and includes a sunken garden that was converted from an old reservoir. Adjoining the sunken garden is a rose arbor that adds to the general beauty of the campus.
