Department of Education Releases 2001 CDRs

The Department of Education released a briefing detailing 2001 cohort default rate (CDR) information. Overall, CDRs are down to 5.4% from 5.9% in 2000. While the rate at for-profit institutions remains higher than in other sectors of postsecondary education, it dropped 0.4% for the year to 9%. More importantly, no institutions had a CDR high enough in 2001 to cause them to lose Title IV aid eligibility.

The Department of Education, at the recent CCA Board of Director meeting, made a presentation detailing default management strategies, and stated their commitment to working with institutions to keep default rates down.

The complete CDR briefing can be downloaded from the Department's IFAP website at http://ifap.ed.gov/eannouncements/0916NationalDefaultRateBriefing.html. Information on default management is available from Federal Student Aid (FSA) at http://www.ed.gov/offices/OSFAP/defaultmanagement/cdr.html.
