National Security Entry-Exit Registration System Modified
The Department of Homeland Security has announced that certain provisions of the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System (NSEERS) have been changed. This is the system that required males entering the United States on various visas, including F, M, and J student visas, to register with the federal government when entering the country, again thirty days later, and annually after that. As of now, individuals will be notified when they must re-register. Eventually, the re-registration system will be completely replaced with the collection of biometric data, such as fingerprints and iris scans, when entering the country.
These requirements are in addition to any and all SEVIS registration regulations student visa holders must comply with. Several of the regulations have been updated to streamline the process for holders of various visas. For example, a student filing a change of address in SEVIS will be considered to have complied with the change of address notification requirement in NSEERS.
CCA will post an overview of the final NSEERS regulations when they are published. Detailed information about the current requirements for the registration system and updated rules may be obtained from the Department of Homeland Security at http://www.ice.gov/graphics/enforce/imm/imm_sr.htm.
