ED Issues Guidance for Title IV Participants Affected by a Disaster

The Department of Education has released updated guidance for assisting Title IV participants who have been affected by a federally declared disaster. These participants can include students and their families, institutions, lenders and guaranty agencies. The guidance applies to affected parties who live in, work in, or attend an institution located in an area designated a federal disaster area, as well as the institutions and lending and guaranty agencies located in those areas. In the past, guidance has been issued as each situation occurred; this guidance is intended to provide general information that will allow affected parties to receive timely relief in these situations.

The guidance supplements the information in the 2003-2004 FSA Handbook, and will be incorporated into the 2004-2005 edition. The complete Dear Colleague letter, with guidance broken down by regulatory section, can be accessed on the IFAP web site at http://ifap.ed.gov/dpcletters/GEN0404.html.
