Barstow Community College -- Programs that Prepare Students for Advanced Education and Career Prep

Barstow Community College (BCC) offers a variety of undergraduate and certificate programs designed to prepare students in basic skills and career and technical education. Programs are designed to assist students in transferring to 4-year colleges and universities. Curriculum promotes student engagement, critical thinking, communication, and global awareness. BCC's innovative learning environment also provides counseling and support services to help students achieve their personal and professional goals.

Associates Degrees from Barstow Community College

Barstow offers an Associate of Arts (AA) in Humanities, an AA in Social Science, an Associate of Science (AS) in Natural Science/Math, an AS in Physical Education, and other AS degrees in a variety of occupational majors. All associate's programs require a minimum of 60 course credits for each student, including at least 18 in the student's chosen program of study and 12 units to be taken at the college.

Associate's programs are divided into occupational and non-occupational fields. Occupational majors include accounting, business, child development, cosmetology, electronics technology, fire technology, management, photography, and welding, among others. Students can complete more than 1 AS degree as long as they meet program and general education requirements.

Certificate Programs from Barstow Community College

Barstow offers Certificates of Achievement to students who complete business, technical, or vocational programs. Certificate programs are available in 15 areas: accounting, administration of justice, automotive technology, business information systems (office services), business information systems (administrative assistant), child development, computer information systems, cosmetology, diesel technology, electronics technology, information systems management, management, medical assistance, photography, and welding. Students pursuing specific career tracks may choose to complete the Certificate of Career Preparation, which is awarded like regular certificates, but is not posted to student transcripts.

BCC also offers Certificates of Achievement (Low-Unit). These certificates generally require less than 18 units within a major program. Low-unit certificates are available in 7 topics, including blueprint reading, emergency management, family day care, manicuring, network administrator, residential carpentry, and webmaster.

Vibrant Student Life at BCC

Students at Barstow Community College can participate in over 15 student clubs and organizations. For instance, student government is represented by the Associated Student Body (ASB), and allows all students to run for election and contribute to college-wide policymaking. The Cosmetology Club is designed to provide leadership skills to current cosmetology students. Club Technology is open to all students with interests in, knowledge of, or a desire for math, science, and technology.

BCC is also home to Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor society for 2-year colleges. Members receive recognition through scholarships, graduate with honors, and can earn awards for service.

Tutoring and Support Services

The Barstow College Learning Resource Center provides instructional support to students through BCC's library, tutoring center, and computer commons. The BCC tutorial lab keeps open hours, when students can drop in for math and English assistance, and has tutors available for specialized subjects at specific times. Students can also post questions to the online tutorial discussion board and receive feedback from designated tutors and peers.
