Bennett College -- A United Methodist College with a Diverse Population

Bennett College was founded in 1873 and established on its current site in Greensboro, North Carolina, by a group of emancipated slaves. Today, Bennett College operates as a historically black, liberal arts college for women. Even though the college is affiliated with the United Methodist Church, Bennett welcomes students, staff members, and faculty members from diverse backgrounds. Bennett students participate in an interdisciplinary education rich in scholarly excellence, leadership preparation, technological advancement, and responsible humanitarian action.

Known as Bennett Belles, graduates leave with wide knowledge of the history and culture of Africa and the African Diaspora, and the struggles and accomplishments of women. Graduates have developed their own self-expression and leadership abilities. As a result, alumni of Bennett College are among the contributing women of achievement within their communities.

16 Majors Available from Bennett College

Bennett College offers 5 degrees encompassing 16 majors and 24 topics of study in the areas of education, the humanities, mathematics, social science, and natural and behavioral sciences. Degrees available include the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Social Work, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Arts and Science in Interdisciplinary Studies. Each undergraduate degree requires the satisfactory completion of 124 credit hours of study.

Majors available from Bennett College include: arts management, biology, business administration, chemistry, computer science, elementary education, English, interdisciplinary studies, journalism and media studies, mathematics, political science, psychology, social work, special education, and visual and performing arts.

Dual Degree Programs Available in 4 Areas of Engineering

Bennett College offers a dual degree in engineering with North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. Through the program, students receive 2nd degrees in engineering upon finishing their undergraduate educations. Degrees are offered in 4 areas: chemistry/chemical engineering, electrical engineering, industrial and systems engineering, and mechanical engineering.

To participate in the dual degree program, students should apply for admission at the end of their 1st years in the office of the Coordinator of the Dual Degree Engineering Program.

Resources and Services from the Thomas F. Holgate Library

The Thomas F. Holgate Library at Bennett College fosters the academic, professional, and personal goals of the college through an array of library resources and services offered during their public service hours. Among the development services offered are identifying and using information resources, research planning, topic and focus refinement, formatting and proofreading, plagiarism and citation style, and various technology-related questions.

Weekly drop-in workshops are also offered on a number of skills topics, including bibliographic management software, evaluating websites for research, and graduate school planning and preparation.

The library's holdings include over 90,000 monographs, 36,000 e-books, 23,000 periodicals with full text access, and 2,400 audio-visual items. In addition, students have access to the holdings of a number of nearby college libraries through the NC-PALS cooperative borrowing agreement, including Greensboro College, Guilford College, Salem Academy, and Salem College.

Financial Aid Opportunities at Bennett College

The Electronic Office of Financial Aid (EOFA) provides a variety of financial opportunities to more than 90 percent of students at Bennett College. Eligible students may apply for 4 types of financial aid offering accessible and affordable education experiences: federal and state grants, scholarships, student loans, and work-study.

Three types of scholarships are available to Bennett students: endowed scholarships, non-endowed scholarships, and institutional scholarships. Scholarships of each category are divided between merit-based or need-based allocations. Financial aid opportunities at Bennett College include the Winston-Salem Police Department Scholarship is awarded to students interested in serving 3-year service commitments after graduation. The NAMIC-Carolina Media and Entertainment Scholarship provides a generous stipend to rising juniors and seniors interested in pursuing careers in the media or entertainment industries.

Campus Setting/Surrounding Area

Along with Winston-Salem and High Point, Greensboro makes up what is known as the Piedmont Triad, one of the South's thriving metropolitan areas. As the third largest city in North Carolina, Greensboro is filled with a myriad of shopping, dining and entertainment venues. Greensboro also proves to be a land of innovation and opportunity which is why many of our students take advantage of the numerous internships and community service projects that are available.

The city has immediate access to I-85 and I-40 and encompasses the Piedmont Triad International Airport, Amtrak and Greyhound bus services.
