The College

Brown Mackie College - Birmingham (Brown Mackie College) is one of over twenty-five locations in the Brown Mackie College family of schools (www.brownmackie.edu), which is dedicated to providing educational programs that prepare students to pursue entry-level positions in a competitive, rapidly changing workplace. Brown Mackie College schools offer bachelor degree, associate degree, diploma, and certificate programs in health sciences, business, information technology, legal studies, and design to thousands of students in the Midwest, Southeast, Southwest, and Western United States.

Brown Mackie College was originally founded and approved by the Board of Trustees of Kansas Wesleyan College in Salina, Kansas on July 30, 1892. In 1938, the College was incorporated as the Brown Mackie School of Business under the ownership of Perry E. Brown and A.B. Mackie, former instructors at Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, Kansas. Their last names formed the name of Brown Mackie. By January 1975, with improvements in curricula and higher degree-granting status, the Brown Mackie School of Business became Brown Mackie College.

Brown Mackie College - Birmingham is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools to award bachelor degrees, associate degrees, and diplomas. The Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools is listed as a nationally recognized accrediting agency by the United States Department of Education and is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. Brown Mackie College - Birmingham is conveniently located at 105 Vulcan Road, in Birmingham, Alabama. The college has a generous parking area and is easily accessible by public transportation.

Programs of Study and Degrees

Brown Mackie College - Birmingham provides higher education to traditional and nontraditional students through bachelor degree, associate degree, and diploma programs that assist in enhancing their career opportunities, broadening their perspectives through appropriate general education courses, thinking independently and critically, and improving problem-solving abilities. The college strives to develop within its students the desire for lifelong and continued education.

The Bachelor of Science degree is awarded in business administration, health care management, and legal studies.

The Associate of Science degree is awarded in accounting technology, architectural design and drafting technology, biomedical equipment technology, business management, graphic design, health care administration, information technology, medical assisting, paralegal, and surgical technology.

The Associate of Applied Science degree is awarded in occupational therapy assistant.

The college offers diploma programs in accounting, business, dental assistant, healthcare administrative specialist, medical assistant, and paralegal assistant.

The American Medical Technologists (AMT), which offers the certification for Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), accepts the ac-creditation of Brown Mackie College - Birmingham. Students will qualify to take the Registered Medical Assistant certification ex-amination upon graduating the Brown Mackie College - Birmingham Medical Assisting and Medical Assistant programs. Graduates of the 48-credit-hour Medical Assistant program are not qualified to take the AMT/RMA exam.

Brown Mackie College - Birmingham does not guarantee third-party certification. Outside agencies control the requirements for certifications and are subject to change without notice to Brown Mackie College.

Academic Programs

Each college quarter comprises twelve weeks. Bachelor degree programs require a minimum of sixteen quarters to complete. Associate degree programs require a minimum of eight quarters to complete. Programs are offered on a year-round basis, providing students with the ability to work uninterrupted toward completion of their programs. The college offers all programs in a unique One-Course-a-Month format. This allows students to focus studies on only one course for four weeks. This schedule has proven convenient for students with multiple obligations, such as jobs and family.

Academic Facilities

A modern facility, Brown Mackie College offers approximately 35,000 square feet of classroom, computer and allied health labs, library, and office space. The college is equipped with multiple computer labs, housing over 100 computers. High-speed access to the Internet and other online resources are available to students and faculty. Multimedia classrooms are outfitted with overhead projectors, VCR/DVD players, and computers.

In 2012, Brown Mackie College began its transition to using eTextbooks and computer tablets in the classroom. Utilizing these tablets to access expanded course material, students will be able to increase their acumen for using this technology and further enhance their educational experience. Students have the ability to directly download their eTextbooks to their tablet, eliminating the need to carry heavy, physical textbooks and reducing the overall cost of supplies.

Brown Mackie College is nonresidential; public transportation and ample parking at no cost are available. The campus is a smoke-free facility.

Costs

Tuition in the 2011-12 academic year for all bachelor and associate degrees and certificates was $315 per credit hour; fees were $15 per credit hour. Tuition for the surgical technology program was $350 per credit hour; fees were $15 per credit hour. Tuition for the occupational therapy assistant program was $381 per credit hour; fees were $15 per credit hour. The cost of textbooks and other instructional materials varies by program.

Financial Aid

Financial aid is available for those who qualify. Brown Mackie College maintains a full-time staff of Student Financial Services Advisors to assist qualified students in obtaining the financial assistance they require to meet their educational expenses. Available resources include federal and state aid, student loans from private lenders, and Federal Work-Study opportunities, both on and off college premises.

Each year, the college makes available President's Scholarships of $1000 each to qualifying seniors from area high schools. Up to three (3) scholarships may be awarded per high school. In order to qualify, a senior must have graduated from a participating high school, must have maintained a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0, and must have submitted a brief essay. The student's extracurricular activities and community service are also considered. These scholarships are available only to students enrolling in one of the college's degree programs. Students awarded the scholarship must enroll at Brown Mackie College - Birmingham between June and September immediately following their high school graduation. Applications for these scholarships can be obtained from the guidance departments of participating high schools. These applications must be completed and returned to Brown Mackie College by March 31.

Faculty

Experienced faculty members provide academic support and are committed to the academic and technical preparation of their students. The college has both full-time and part-time instructors, with a student-faculty ratio of 15:1.

Admission Requirements

Each applicant for admission is assigned an Assistant Director of Admissions who directs the applicant through the steps of the admissions process. Assistant Directors provide information on curriculum, policies, procedures, and services and assist the applicant in setting up necessary appointments and interviews. To qualify for admission, each applicant must provide documentation of graduation from an accredited high school or from a state-approved secondary education curriculum or provide official documentation of high school graduation equivalency. All transcripts become the property of the college. Admission to the college is based on the applicant meeting the stated requirements, a review of the applicant's previous educational records, and a review of the applicant's career interests. If previous academic records indicate the college's education and training programs would not benefit the applicant, the college reserves the right to advise the applicant not to enroll. Special requirements for enrollment into certain programs are discussed in the descriptions of those programs.
