The College and Its Mission

Brown Mackie College--Fort Wayne is one of over twenty-five locations in the Brown Mackie College family of schools (www.brownmackie.edu), which is dedicated to providing educational programs that prepare students to pursue entry-level positions in a competitive, rapidly changing workplace. Brown Mackie College schools offer bachelor's degree, associate degree, certificate, and diploma programs in health sciences, business, information technology, legal studies, and design to over 20,000 students in the Midwest, Southeast, Southwest, and Western United States.

Brown Mackie College--Fort Wayne is one of the oldest institutions of its kind in the country and the oldest in the state of Indiana. Established in 1882 as the South Bend Commercial College, the school later changed its name to Michiana College. In 1930, the College was incorporated under the laws of the state of Indiana and was authorized to confer associate degrees and certificates in business. In 1992, the College in South Bend added a branch location in Fort Wayne. In 2004, Michiana College changed its name to Brown Mackie College--Fort Wayne.

Brown Mackie College--Fort Wayne is owned and operated by Education Management Corporation (EDMC), 210 Sixth Avenue, 33rd Floor, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15222-2603. EDMC has been in business for over forty years and is one of the largest providers of private post-secondary education in North America with eighty-nine campus locations in twenty-eight states and Canada.

Brown Mackie College--Fort Wayne is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) to award bachelor¿s degrees, associate degrees, diplomas, and certificates. ACICS is listed as a nationally recognized accrediting agency by the United States Department of Education and is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. The occupational therapy assistant program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), 4720 Montgomery Lane, P.O. In order to practice as occupational therapy assistants, graduates must pass the certification examination for the certified occupational therapy assistant. Application for such examination is arranged through the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy, Inc. (NBCOT). Graduates may request application materials and the candidate handbook from NBCOT or apply online. To practice as an occupational therapy assistant in Indiana, a graduate must be certified by the state. The College¿s diploma program in practical nursing is accredited by the Indiana State Board of Nursing, 402 West Washington Street, Room W066, Indianapolis, Indiana 46204; phone: 317-234-2043. Graduates are eligible to complete two applications: the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) and the Indiana licensure application. Indiana applications for licensure by examination must be completed by each candidate and be submitted to the Health Professions Bureau. Registration with NCLEX must be completed according to the instructions in the NCLEX Candidate Bulletin. Both the Indiana licensure application and the NCLEX registration process must be completed before eligibility to take the examination can be granted by the Indiana Board of Nursing. The surgical technology program is accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES). Graduates of this program are eligible at their option to sit for the surgical technologist certification examination. Graduates who pass this examination are awarded the Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential. A CST must be recertified every four years through continuing education or reexamination. Academic Programs

Brown Mackie College--Fort Wayne provides higher education to traditional and nontraditional students through bachelor's degree, associate degree, diploma, and certificate programs that assist them in enhancing their career opportunities, broadening their perspectives through appropriate general education courses, thinking independently and critically, and improving problem-solving abilities. The College strives to develop within its students the desire for lifelong and continued education.

Each College quarter comprises twelve weeks. Bachelor's degree programs require a minimum of sixteen quarters to complete. Associate degree programs require a minimum of eight quarters to complete. Programs are offered on a year-round basis, providing students with the ability to work uninterrupted toward their degrees. The College offers all programs in a unique One Course a Month format. This allows students to focus studies on only one course for four weeks. This schedule has proven convenient for students with multiple obligations such as jobs and family.

Bachelor's Degree Programs: The Bachelor of Science degree is awarded in business administration, criminal justice, health care management, and legal studies.

Associate Degree Programs: The Associate of Science degree is awarded in accounting technology, business management, criminal justice, health care administration, medical assisting, office management, paralegal, and surgical technology.

The Associate of Applied Science degree is awarded in biomedical equipment technology, dietetics technology, health and fitness training, health and therapeutic massage, nursing, occupational therapy assistant, physical therapist assistant, and veterinary technology.

Diploma Program: A diploma is awarded in practical nursing.

Certificate Programs: The College offers certificate programs in accounting, business, criminal justice, fitness trainer, medical assistant, and paralegal assistant.

Costs

Tuition in the 2010--11 academic year was $285 per credit hour with fees of $15 per credit hour for all programs except nursing, practical nursing, surgical technology, personal fitness training, occupational therapy assistant, and physical therapist assistant. The cost of textbooks and other instructional materials varies by program. For the nursing program, tuition was $390 per credit hour; fees were $25 per credit hour. For the practical nursing program, tuition was $350 per credit hour; fees were $25 per credit hour. For the surgical technology program, tuition was $330 per credit hour; fees were $15. Tuition for the personal fitness training programs was $295 per credit hour; fees were $25 per credit hour. Textbook expenses are estimated at $400 for the first term, $600 for the second term, and $100 for the third, fourth, and fifth terms. For certain courses in the occupational therapy assistant and physical therapist assistant programs, tuition was $350 per credit hour; fees were $15 per credit hour. Textbook expenses are estimated at $370 per quarter for the first six terms and $460 for the seventh term.

Financial Aid

The College maintains a full-time staff of financial aid professionals to assist qualified students in obtaining financial assistance. The College participates in several student aid programs. Forms of financial aid available through federal resources include the Federal Pell Grant Program, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) Program, Federal Work-Study Program, Federal Perkins Loan Program, Federal Stafford Student Loan Program (subsidized and unsubsidized), and the Federal PLUS Loan Program. Eligible students may apply for Indiana state awards, such as the Frank O¿Bannon Grant Program (formerly the Indiana State Grant Program), the Higher Education Award, and Twenty-First Century Scholarships for high school students; the Core 40 awards; and veterans¿ educational benefits. Each year, the College makes available President's Scholarships of $1000 each to qualifying seniors from area high schools. No more than one scholarship is awarded per high school. In order to qualify, a senior must have graduated from a participating high school, maintained a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0, and submitted a brief essay. The student's extracurricular activities and community service are also considered. The President's Scholarship is available only to students enrolling in one of the College¿s degree programs. Students awarded the scholarship must enroll at Brown Mackie College--Fort Wayne between June and September immediately following their high school graduation. Applications for these scholarships can be obtained from the guidance departments of participating high schools. These applications must be completed and returned to the College by March 31.




Faculty

The College has 45 full-time and 80 part-time instructors, with a student-faculty ratio of 15:1. Each student is assigned a faculty adviser.

Facilities and Resources

In 2005, the campus relocated to a 75,000-square-foot facility at 3000 East Coliseum Boulevard. Record enrollment allowed the institution to triple in size in less than one year. The three-story building offers a modern, professional environment for study. Ten classrooms are outfitted as "classrooms of the future," with an instructor workstation, full multimedia capabilities, a surround sound system, and projection screen that can be accessed by computer, DVD, or VHS equipment. The Brown Mackie College--Fort Wayne facility includes a criminal justice lab, surgical technology labs, medical labs, computer labs, and occupational and physical therapy labs, as well as a library and bookstore. The labs provide students with hands-on opportunities to apply knowledge and skills learned in the classroom. Students are welcome to use the labs when those facilities are not in use for scheduled classes.

The College is nonresidential. The College facility is accessible by public transportation. Ample parking is provided at no additional charge. The campus is a smoke-free facility.

Location

Brown Mackie College--Fort Wayne is located at 3000 East Coliseum Boulevard in Fort Wayne, Indiana. For added convenience, the College also operates a learning site at 2135 South Hannah Drive in Fort Wayne.

Admission Requirements

Each applicant for admission is assigned an Assistant Director of Admissions, who directs the applicant through the steps of the admissions process, providing information on curriculum, policies, procedures, and services and assisting the applicant in setting necessary appointments and interviews.

To qualify for admission, each applicant must provide documentation of graduation from an accredited high school or from a state-approved secondary education curriculum or provide official documentation of high school graduation equivalency. All transcripts become the property of the College. Admission to the College is based on the applicant meeting the stated requirements, a review of the applicant's previous educational records, and a review of the applicant's career interests. If previous academic records indicate the College's education and training programs would not benefit the applicant, the College reserves the right to advise the applicant not to enroll. Special requirements for enrollment into certain programs are discussed in the descriptions of those programs.

In addition to the College's general admission requirements, applicants enrolling in the practical nursing program must document the following, which must be completed and a record of proof must appear in the student's file prior to the start of the nursing fundamentals course. No student will be admitted to a clinical agency unless all paperwork is completed. This paperwork is a requirement of all contracted agencies. This paperwork includes records of (1) a complete physical, current to within six months of admission; (2) a two-step Mantoux test that is kept current throughout schooling; (3) a hepatitis B vaccination or signed refusal; (4) up-to-date immunizations, including tetanus and rubella; (5) a record of current CPR certification that is maintained throughout the student¿s clinical experience; and (6) hospitalization insurance or a signed waiver.
