Set in the historic town of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Carlow University is one of the oldest private Catholic universities in the nation. It is a women-centered university that strives to produce graduates that are leaders, critical thinkers, and successful in both their personal and professional life. Students enjoy a solid liberal arts education. The university offers a diverse core curriculum and strong focus on the humanities and nursing.

More than 2,000 students attend Carlow University and call Pittsburgh their temporary home. Ample student housing is available, and there are many cultural, educational, and entertainment possibilities close at hand. There is a vibrant underground music scene, high-brow operas, and numerous museums, such as the Andy Warhol Museum, the Carnegie Science Center, and the Heinz History Center. The Heinz and Carnegie families invested millions in creating family attractions, sports arenas, museums, and more - and Carlow's students get to reap the benefits.

Students of Carlow University can find part-time employment and internships both on campus and around Pittsburgh. Major employers in the area include Heinz, Alcoa, and others in industries such as technology, health care, nuclear engineering, and biomedicine. Carlow University teams with many of Pittsbugh's businesses to provide interns with real-world experience.

Aside from its main campus, Carlow University has other campuses in and around Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Carlow University Cranberry Education Center, located in Cranberry, offers various undergraduate and graduate programs and is close to the main campus. The Greensburg Education Center is located in Hempfield Township and hosts several graduate and undergraduate classes.

Carlow University: More than Liberal Arts, Humanities, and Nursing

At Carlow University, students get a well-rounded liberal arts education, with degrees offered in a number of different fields. Most notably, students can get specialized degrees from Carlow's renowned humanities department and stellar nursing program. Other fields of study include natural sciences, mathematics, social change, management, education, creative writing, technology, business administration, counseling, leadership, and psychology.

Nursing students have many options for internships and work-study programs at local employers and medical facilities in Pittsburgh. This provides students with important hands-on experience and helps in preparing them for real-world situations. Nursing students can pursue specialized degrees such as a B.S. in Nursing, RN, B.S.N., and M.S.N. There is also a fast-track nursing program that allows practicing nurses to get their M.S.N. in a short time.

Overall, the Division of Humanities at Carlow University focuses on giving students a broad liberal arts education to carry with them through their personal and professional lives. Students study a wide spectrum of disciplines to give them a unique perspective of history, culture, and spirituality. Students can earn majors, minors, or double majors and minors in English, Spanish, theology, writing, art, and history, to name just a few of the fields available.

Carlow University: Student Life and Student Organizations

Though it is a Catholic university, students need not be of the Catholic faith to attend Carlow. In fact, the school has a very diverse population, with over 20 percent African-American students and more than 50 percent first-generation students. The school is well-known for its stellar graduation records and job placement. Nearly 80 percent of Carlow's graduates find employment within their desired field, and a respectable number choose to stay in Pittsburgh to build their futures.

Student life at Carlow University includes a strong commitment to community service. Students regularly engage in volunteerism at local Catholic churches and other organizations in Pittsburgh. This conforms to the school's commitment to producing world-view students that recognize the plight of the poor and disenfranchised and instilling leadership and charitable qualities that last long after their student life at Carlow.

Leadership is paramount at Carlow University. Many professional and student organizations on campus exist to aid students in developing and exercising this skill. Campus organizations that work to foster leadership include the National Association for Campus Activities, American College Personnel Association, Computer Club, EcoClub, National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, National Association of Directors of Orientation, American Student Government Association, International Student Association, Social Work Student Association, Black Student Union Women in Communications, and several Greek student organizations.

Wellness and a healthy lifestyle are also encouraged in student life. There are a number of programs, sports activities, and student organizations dedicated to personal health and well-being. Students can work out at the Carlow University fitness center or engage in organized sports, such as rowing (crew), basketball, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball. There are also student organizations that focus on non-traditional activities like Frisbee golf and others. Overall, student life at Carlow is filled with health, happiness, and leadership.
