Overview

A Liberal Arts College With a Rich History and a Bright Future

Founded in 1837, Cheyney University is known as the first institution for higher learning for African Americans. Established through a bequest of Quaker philanthropist Richard Humphreys as the Institute for Colored Youth, Cheyney University is one of America's Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Today Cheyney University serves students of diverse races, cultures and nationalities, offering over 30 undergraduate degree and several master's degree programs.

Cheyney graduates occupy prominent positions in the fields of journalism, government, medicine, business, science and law. CU graduates include Ed Bradley from the CBS program "60 Minutes" and Philadelphia Tribune publisher Robert Bogle, Ambassador Joseph Segars and Congressman Curt Weldon.

Located in historic Cheyney, Pennsylvania, the picturesque campus is home to over 1,100 students. With more than 40 student organizations and 11 Division II NCAA -- PSAC athletic teams, students enjoy a thriving academic community and social opportunities at a liberal arts college committed to community service.

Academic Schools, Majors and Degrees

The Cheyney University School of Arts and Sciences offers a wide range of Bachelor of Science (BS), Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Associate of Science (AS) degree programs in both traditional and emerging fields of study. The School offers, among other things, Bachelor of Arts degree programs in Theatre Arts, Biology, Chemistry, Communication Arts, General Science, Liberal Studies, Math, Political Science, Psychology, English, Social Relations, Social Science and Geographic Information Science. Bachelor of Science degrees offered include Biology, Business Administration, Chemistry, and Computer Science. Concentrations in Art, Music, Theatre, and Gospel Music are also available.

The Department of Natural and Applied Sciences offers Bachelor of Arts degree programs in Biology, Business Administration, Chemistry, Computer Science, General Science and Computer and Information Science.

The School of Education and Professional Studies has a long legacy of providing the state with teachers of color, as during much of the 20th century Cheyney University was a teacher training institute. Today, the school offers a B.S. in Early Childhood Education and Special Education. The department also offers a principal certification program and Master of Education degrees in educational leadership and special education. Other Bachelor of Science degrees offered include Business Administration, Fashion Marketing and Management, Recreation and Leisure Management and Hotel, Restaurant, Tourism Management.

An Emphasis on High-Demand Occupation STEM Fields

Cheyney University of Pennsylvania strives to train students for high-demand occupations in the fields of science, technology and mathematics (STEM). The Department of Natural and Applied Sciences offers B.S. degree programs in biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, marine biology, and general science, as well as an A.S. degree program in the emerging field of nanotechnology.

The University is home to NSF-BEAMS, a project funded by the National Science Foundation through a $2.5 million grant. The project, intended to support STEM education for underrepresented minorities, trains students in the use of equipment and technologies, assists students in securing paid summer internships and year-long research opportunities at partner institutions, and arranges workshops for students conducted by graduate and health professional schools and businesses.

The Aquaculture Research and Education Laboratory

Cheyney University houses the Aquaculture Research and Education Laboratory (AREL). This special facility enables marine biology majors to specialize in aquaculture, the growing of aquatic plants and animals in controlled environments. Students can participate in research programs in urban aquaculture, fish physiology, and nutrition, which is an emerging field.

Professional Studies

The School of Education and Professional Studies encompasses three departments. In addition to its Education curriculum, Hospitality and Leisure Studies offers a B.S. in Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Management degree program and a B.S. in Recreation and Leisure Management degree program. The Department of Businesses Administration provides both a B.S. in Business Administration degree program and a B.S. in Fashion Merchandising and Management degree program. Opportunities for participation in internships, conferences and external activities enrich student experiences

The Keystone Honors Academy

The Keystone Honors Academy (KHA) enriches academic life at Cheyney University. KHA provides scholarships, research internships, and study abroad opportunities. It organizes visits to historical sites and cultural events. The Academy hosts speakers of international renown such as Nikki Giovanni, Maya Angelou, and Cornell West. KHA students place into prestigious graduate schools, often receiving full scholarships.

Vibrant Campus Life

Cheyney University is home to interfaith groups, Greek organizations, honor societies, and an active student government that provides a voice regarding policies that impact student welfare and that funds clubs and co-curricular activities.

Students also participate in and enjoy men's basketball, football, cross country, and indoor and outdoor track and field teams, and women's basketball, bowling, cross country, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, volleyball, and cheerleading teams.

Financial Aid at Cheyney University of Pennsylvania

Cheyney University awards financial aid in the form of grants, scholarships, work-study, and loans. CU students are eligible for the need-based Pennsylvania State Grant Program, the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) grant program for future educators, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, and the Federal Pell Grant.
