Can I Get My Company to Help Pay My Tuition?

By Peterson's Staff updated on Monday, April 07, 2014
"I want to go back to school to finish my college degree but I cannot afford to leave my job.  I like the field and the work I do now.  I hope to be given more responsibility one day and eventually a promotion and higher pay.  Can I get my company to help pay my tuition?"

If you are wondering about how to finance your college education, it is a good idea to consider asking your employer to help pay for part or all of your tuition costs.  Many companies do offer tuition assistance to employees, hoping to keep them in their employ after they complete their degree.  This becomes a win-win situation because the employer will have a worker with increased academic knowledge and the employee will have finished or be working toward finishing his or her degree.  Everybody benefits!

This may be particularly important for women going back to work, after being out of the labor force for a while, perhaps managing a household and raising a family.  Being able to take college courses to update academic knowledge can help working women and men become more competitive in the job market.  As time passes, technology improves most aspects of the working world and it is important to be as up-to-date as possible to perform to the best of your abilities.  The world is changing and it is a good idea to change with it! Going back to work just got easier.

If you have a good job but want to make more money or be eligible for promotions, think about going back to college online to begin or complete your degree.  There are also a number of courses offered online which confer professional certification in specific fields.  Working women especially will benefit from looking into these online courses which maximize convenience without sacrificing the worth of the classes.  If you can sit at your kitchen table in your casual clothes and earn college credits, while your young children sleep in the other room, why not go for it?  You can study at your own pace and on your own schedule.  No need to drive to a college campus at a specific time, requiring the added cost of babysitters. You can relax in your home and read, study, and join in on group discussions on your personal computer.

The reduced cost of online education also represents value to the employer and to you.  Consider looking into DreamDegree.org to learn more about their online college courses. DreamDegree offers free consultations with personal education coaches who can offer expert advice on the options available to you.  Ask the coaches questions, learn about scholarship programs and reduced tuition costs, and discover the best courses to pursue your academic interests.

It is a good idea to ask your employer about tuition benefits.  The advantages of going back to work will be increased if you can get your company to pay your tuition costs.  You will be able to work towards your college degree and your boss will have a motivated employee who will bring new skills and ideas to work every day.
