Eastern Michigan University (Distance Education) - Overview

Online and Independent Learning at Eastern Michigan University

Eastern Michigan University -- a public university established in 1849 -- offers a wide variety of online courses for both undergraduate and graduate students. EMU is currently comprised of 5 colleges, each focused on one of the following areas of study: arts and sciences; business; education; health and human services; and technology. Students may receive credit for prior learning and portfolio development.

Costs and Financial Aid

Tuition for full-time undergraduate students is $246.95 for in-state residents in addition to $44.50 per credit hour program fee. In addition to the tuition, students are charged a general fee, technology fee and student union fee, which are combined and labeled "student fees." Students may be eligible for federal financial aid (Pell and ACG grants) through FAFSA or various university scholarships.

Applications

Undergraduate applicants must submit completed applications; non-refundable, $30 processing fees ($20 if applying online); official high school transcripts; ACT or SAT test scores; and academic and personal honors.

Graduate students must submit completed applications; non-refundable, $35 processing fees ($25 if applying online); official transcripts from all colleges or universities previously attended; department application forms when necessary; personal statements summarizing plans of study; letters of recommendation, some of which may require specific forms; and test scores when necessary (GRE or GMAT).

Undergraduate applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Application deadlines for the spring and summer semesters are April 15 and June 15, respectively.

Certificates/Endorsements

EMU offers a wide variety of certificate programs requiring students to complete between 15 and 21 hours of study.

Applied Technology (Degree Completion Program)

EMU's Bachelor of Science (BS) in Applied Technology is designed for undergraduates who have received credit from community colleges in technical areas and seek to enhance their employment opportunities. Students can select from courses in engineering technology, general education requirements, and certain science and mathematics classes.

Of the 124 credit hours required for a student to earn a bachelor's degree in applied technology, up to 94 may be transferred from a community college that has an articulation agreement.

Dietetics (Coordinated Program in Dietetics)

The EMU-Online Coordinated Program in Dietetics (CPD) integrates didactic (lecture/classroom) instruction with 1,200 hours of supervised practice experiences (lab classes). This is a full time program completed by each student in 20 months (fall, winter, spring/summer, fall and winter semesters). Out-of-state students can take EMU-Online courses at Michigan in-state tuition rates.

Once accepted into the bachelor's in dietetics (CPD) program, students begin the professional phase of the program. This means they will take all course work in a specific sequence and complete supervised practice experiences concurrently with the lecture courses.

Nursing (RN to BSN Completion Program)

Eastern Michigan University's RN to BSN completion program builds on previous learning to include additional material in health assessment, professionalism in nursing, nursing research, leadership/management and community health nursing. This program is designed for the nurse with the busy schedule. Program highlights include: nursing classes that meet one night a week; credit for previous course work; highly qualified faculty members; the use of world-class health care agencies; and affordable tuition.

The RN to BSN completion program at EMU is approved by the Michigan State Board of Nursing. The program provides credit for previous course work, 84 hours of clinical placements arranged with preceptors, and also fits into a busy RN's schedule by meeting only one evening a week.

Technology Management (Degree Completion Program

This unique undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree program provides many opportunities for a student transferring from a community college with a technical degree. This program of study brings together technical and academic fields and will provide additional opportunities for graduates in mid-management positions or for advancement within existing careers. The technology management core is applicable to a broad variety of 2-year technical degree programs, ranging from business and health-oriented programs of study to criminal justice, environmental technology, and Internet professional programs.

Technology-based corporations have an increasing need for rapid innovation in strategies, products, processes and services distinct from traditional high volume mass production or the service companies of past decades. Managers of technology, therefore, need to acquire the knowledge and skills to enable them to compete effectively in world markets. The core courses in the technology management program will provide each student with the necessary skills and knowledge to be an effective technology manager.
