Overview

Emmanuel: a Personal College in the Heart of Boston

Emmanuel College, founded by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1919, is a coed, residential, Catholic liberal arts and sciences institution located in the heart of Boston. The college's student body includes 1,800 undergraduate students from 35 countries and 33 states; its neighbors include the world-class surgeons of the Longwood Medical and Academic Area, the Monets and Gauguins of the Museum of Fine Arts, and 250,000 college students at institutions across the city.

With a history of providing high-quality, values-based academic programs, Emmanuel offers opportunities to learn, teach, explore and research in more than 40 areas of study. Through a supportive learning environment that fosters academic excellence, intellectual integrity and a strong social conscience, Emmanuel students develop the skills and confidence to succeed and make a difference in an ever-changing world.

The college's campus is a friendly, welcoming community alive with energy of teaching and learning, of exploration and research. Emmanuel is the only college in the country to boast a 12-story, 300,000 square-foot private research facility right on campus: Merck Research Laboratories-Boston. Recently, the college opened its state-of-the-art Maureen Murphy Wilkens Science Center, renovated its Art Department and restored nearby Roberto Clemente Field, which serves as home field for Emmanuel athletics.

At Emmanuel, internships are an integral component of a student's education experience; in fact, the majority of the college's departments require an internship. Emmanuel's Boston location gives students access to some of the most renowned financial, cultural, medical and academic institutions in the world. Nearly 90 percent of Emmanuel students from all academic disciplines participate in internships to apply the knowledge they have gained in the classroom within a professional environment, to enhance their skills and to build a network of professional contacts.

Emmanuel: The Advantage of a Personalized Liberal Arts and Sciences Curriculum

Emmanuel offers a rigorous liberal arts and sciences curriculum supported by an individualized approach. The academic requirements of Emmanuel College have been designed to ensure that every student experiences the range of skills and content implied by the liberal arts mission of the college. Through required courses drawn from a cross-section of the liberal arts (history, literature, the arts, philosophy, religion, the social sciences, the natural sciences and the study of cultures outside the United States), students are exposed to models of analytical reasoning, symbolic thinking, observation, creativity, critical thinking and moral reasoning. In small classes, working closely with each other and a member of the faculty, students are introduced to the academic traditions of the liberal arts and sciences and to the expectations and values of the academic community.

All first-year students have an academic advisor from the moment they arrive on campus, but for "undecided" students, Emmanuel also offers the Majors Exploration Program. The MEP helps students explore careers and determine possible majors for certain career paths. With over 40 areas of study, Emmanuel students tend to explore their academic options! Students have additional guidance through advisors in the Office of Internships and Career Development.

To complement the academic experience, Emmanuel offer students opportunities to study and travel abroad. Students can spend a year, semester, summer, or school break in over 70 countries. Emmanuel students have studied everywhere, from Italy and Uganda to China and Argentina.

Emmanuel: Vibrant Student Life on Campus

Students at Emmanuel benefit from being in the center of it all. Students walk outside their door and experience a 17-acre residential campus bursting with life, as well as the endless opportunities that the exciting city of Boston offers. Emmanuel is big-hearted in spirit, global in outlook and small enough to create individual access to whatever opportunities its students seek. The college is alive with energy through more than 90 clubs and organizations, athletics, and various events and activities available for everyone to join. At the core of Emmanuel's mission is a commitment to social justice and service to the community. Close to 85 percent of Emmanuel's students participate in community service during the year.

Emmanuel's NCAA Division III athletics program gives every recruit a chance to make his or her mark. Emmanuel offers 17 strong varsity teams, and enthusiastic Saints fans just helped the college get voted the #1 Most Spirited Institution in Boston for the second year in a row! Emmanuel offers intramural and club teams for those interested in participating but may not want to play a varsity sport.

Emmanuel is part of the Colleges of the Fenway (COF) consortium, which allows students to cross register for courses at neighboring colleges, participate in additional intramurals and play in a joint orchestra. COF schools include Emmanuel College, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Simmons College, Wentworth Institute of Technology, and Wheelock College.

Emmanuel: Living On-Campus in the Center of it All!

Emmanuel students have the opportunity to live on campus all four years, and most do: 94 percent of first-year students live in on-campus housing, and nearly 80 percent remain in college housing until they graduate. Students develop life-long bonds with their roommates, classmates and friends made at Emmanuel

Emmanuel: The Application Process

Emmanuel uses the Common Application as its admissions application. The college has three different admissions deadlines for incoming freshmen from which to choose: Early Decision (November 1 deadline), Early Action (November 15 deadline), or Regular Decision (February 15 deadline).
