Hartwick College - Overview
A 4-Year Liberal Arts College in Scenic Upstate New York
Hartwick College is a private liberal arts college located in Oneonta, New York. The school, which has an enrollment of close to 1,500 full-time students, offers small class sizes and ample opportunities for students to study abroad and gain valuable experience through internships, job shadowing, and collaborative research.
Hartwick College has a reputation for providing high-quality and affordable education. The Princeton Review recently included Hartwick College on its' list of Best Northeastern Colleges, and Forbes Magazine has named Hartwick as one of the top 600 colleges and universities in the nation.
Currently, over 90 percent of Hartwick students find full-time employment or enter graduate school within 6 months of graduation. Many Hartwick graduates choose to pursue advanced degrees at schools including Cornell University, Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, and Boston University.
Individualized Degree Plans and a Wide Variety of Majors
Hartwick College offers Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degrees in more than 30 majors, from accounting and business administration to studio arts and political science. Students may also pursue pre-professional degrees in health professions, engineering, law, and medicine.
Students whose interests lie outside of a traditional major can opt to pursue an Individual Student Program (ISP). All ISP programs must be approved by Hartwick's Interdisciplinary Studies Committee. Once their proposed ISPs are approved, students work closely with program coordinators and advisors to ensure that their programs meet graduation and departmental requirements.
Accelerated Bachelor's Degree Program
In addition to the 4-year degree and ISP programs, Hartwick College offers a 3-year bachelor's degree program. The 3-year program costs about 25 percent less than a traditional 4-year college education. The accelerated program gives students access to the rich experiences of college life -- including on-campus living and opportunities to study abroad -- at a more affordable price.
Hartwick currently offers the 3-year degree program for 24 majors, including business administration, computer science, education, and nursing. Students may also pursue self-designed ISPs.
Students in the accelerated program complete a total of 120 credits in 3 years, or 40 credits per year. To participate in the 3-year bachelor's degree program, students must submit a signed declaration of intent and an application fee. High school students applying for the program must have GPAs of at least 3.0.
A Smooth Transition to Graduate School
Hartwick College has partnered with other area colleges and universities to provide cooperative dual degree programs in a variety of fields including law, business, and nursing.
Students interested in pursuing law degrees can apply for admission to Albany Law School through Hartwick's "3 plus 3" law program. Participating students automatically enter Albany Law School after completing 3 years of pre-law coursework at Hartwick.
Hartwick also offers a "4 plus 1" MBA program. Students in this program earn an MBA after completing 4 years at Hartwick plus 1 additional year at either Clarkson or Union University.
Other cooperative programs include an engineering program through Clarkson University and Columbia University and health-related programs -- including nursing and physical therapy -- through Sage Graduate School and SUNY.
A Leader in Study Abroad Programs
Hartwick College offers multiple opportunities for students to study abroad, and close to 60 percent of Hartwick students study abroad at least once before graduating.
Hartwick students can apply for year- or semester-long study abroad programs in locations around the world. Students can also participate in Hartwick's 4-week January term ("J Term"). Recent and past J Term programs include a chamber music program in Arizona, a German term in Vienna, a business program in China, and a study of Shakespeare's England.
Fees for study abroad programs include airfare, housing, meals, medical insurance, and miscellaneous course-related expenses. To be considered for admission to any of Hartwick's study abroad programs, students must be in good academic standing. Financial aid and scholarships are available.
Cutting-Edge Research Facilities
Hartwick College is home to a variety of unique research institutes and laboratories where students can participate in hands-on learning and research projects. Facilities include the Ernest B. Wright Observatory, a 4-meter domed building and astronomy classroom; the Amphibian Research Laboratory (ARL), which is equipped with state-of-the-art microscopes; and the Yaeger Museum of Art and Culture.
Hartwick's Pine Lake Environmental Campus, located 8 miles from the main campus, gives students the opportunity to pursue environmental and sustainability studies in a classroom composed of woodlands, wetlands, and a lake. Students can collaborate with instructors on research projects in areas including ornithology, entomology, and conservation biology. Pine Lake also provides on-site housing for about 35 students.
Admission Requirements and Fees
