Overview

An Evolving University

Every institution evolves, but few have done so quite as dramatically as Holy Family University in recent times.

Over the last dozen years, Holy Family has transformed itself. Once a commuter college with a modest academic footprint, the institution is now a comprehensive university with more than 30 undergraduate programs and highly respected graduate programs. An extended learning division provides working adults with the opportunity to earn bachelor's and master's degrees in an accelerated format. The university also recently added its first doctoral program, in educational leadership and professional studies.

As significant as Holy Family's scholarly evolution has been, it is matched by tremendous growth in student life. On-campus housing was greatly expanded in the last several years, and the athletics program made the jump to NCAA Division II competition. There is a new vibrancy on campus, an energy that is evident the instant you arrive here.

A Focus on Outcomes

There is a challenging academic environment at Holy Family. To succeed here, a student must be committed. A student must put in the work, the hours, and the effort. But if a student is willing to dedicate him or herself, his or her efforts will be rewarded. A student will receive one of the finest liberal arts educations anywhere, one that will enable him or her to explore new ideas and experiences, one that will fully prepare him or her to hit the ground running when he or she graduates.

A Philadelphia employer was recently asked to describe the Holy Family job candidate. His first words were, "They're different." He went on to describe what he saw as a consistent work ethic and extraordinary preparedness in Holy Family graduates. And it's true. Most of the students at Holy Family University work to be able to come here, and their maturity and work ethic carry over to the classroom. In fact, many of the students work in their field of study, through a highly regarded co-op/internship program, so they carry real-world experience as well. Add to all this the experience of working with nationally recognized professors on a daily basis, and it's easy to see why Holy Family graduates stand out. The difference is real-world. The difference is experience. The difference is preparedness and a focus on student outcomes.

Basking in the Full Collegiate Experience

When residence life returned to Holy Family, it did so in a big way. Not long after welcoming residents to campus, the University opened the Stevenson Lane Residence, a modern, amenities-filled facility as advanced as any in Philadelphia. Holy Family also provides other residential-living experiences, a traditional dormitory designed primarily for freshmen and sophomores and two apartment-style options, meant for upperclassmen. The goal is to offer students the opportunity to make lifelong friends and enjoy the full collegiate experience.

Contributing much to the newly vibrant campus life is Holy Family's 13 NCAA Division II teams in men's and women's athletics, the most prominent of which is the nationally ranked women's basketball team. Holy Family University takes seriously the term "student-athlete," as all of its athletes are encouraged to be their best, not only on the field and court, but in the classroom as well. On a recreational level, Holy Family is just as committed to its students' health and well being, offering an active intramural sports program and an impressive state-of-the-art fitness center featuring an array of cardio- and weight-training equipment.

Finally, there is Philadelphia itself. Just 20 minutes north of Center City, Holy Family gives students easy access to this thriving, world-class city. Whether it's co-ops, internships, or jobs, Philadelphia provides Holy Family students with a wealth of opportunities to learn, gain real-world experience, and succeed. When it's time for fun, the opportunities are just as limitless. The city offers abundant history, culture, sports, and nightlife, plus plenty of friends with whom to enjoy it all. Philadelphia is home to 300,000 students at 80 colleges and universities, the second-largest concentration of students on the East Coast. It's a high-energy, cosmopolitan city, just a short ride from the safe, serene, private campus. For Holy Family students, it's the best of all worlds.

The Opportunity to Challenge and Nurture One's Self

If students at Holy Family seem a little more real, a little less pretentious, it's not by accident. Respect for the individual, the dignity of the human person -- these values are at the very core of the institution. They are values that are taught fervently at Holy Family; even more, they are values that are lived at the university. A concern for moral values and social justice guides all the Holy Family programs and enriches everything that the university community does.

Those values give rise to a vigorous, demanding educational experience that will challenge students even as it teaches them. Yet the Holy Family legacy is also one of mutual support and community. Classes at Holy Family are usually no larger than 20; many hold as few as five or six students. Holy Family's is a smaller, more personal learning environment. Here, students will know their professors, and those professors will know the students just as well. When a student raises his or her hand, he or she will be called on by name. If a student has a question, it'll be answered. If a student needs additional help, he or she will get it. This is not a college where 300 students pile into an auditorium and silently take notes from some distant, faceless instructor. This is more -- an education that's more personal, more welcoming, more in tune to students' success.
