Johnson & Wales University Encourages Community Service and Internships

Johnson & Wales University prepares students for success, both personal and professional. Its unique approach of combining academics and practical skills with relevant directed work experiences and community service work has made JWU a recognized leader in career education.

A major component of the student's education at JWU occurs through directed work experiences such as internships at all of its campuses in Providence, RI; North Miami, FL; Denver, CO; and Charlotte, NC. These experiences are especially important in fields such as food service, hospitality, technology, advertising or business administration, and at JWU they can take the shape of formal internships, education programs for credit, community service learning and more. Work experience programs around the country and the world provide students with practical work experience for academic credit. Every year nearly 2,500 students participate in these programs, giving them valuable exposure to the world of marketing, advertising, criminal justice, hospitality, culinary arts and more, at more than 1,200 employer sites.

Each year, the JWU community performs more than 100,000 hours of community service work. Community Service-Learning (CSL) is an educational program that integrates community service work and academics. The service that students perform is tied to a particular course or internship, which furthers their learning by applying these skills in the real world and helps nonprofit agencies by providing targeted assistance.

JWU has long been recognized for its long-standing commitment to community service work at its campuses in Providence, RI; North Miami, FL; Denver, CO; and Charlotte, NC. Additionally, for the past five years, all four JWU campuses have been named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll -- the highest federal recognition colleges and universities can receive for their community service and service-learning programs.
