Kutztown University (KU) is a 4-year public university located in Berks County, Pennsylvania. One of the 14 Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education schools, KU is a vibrant, modern institution with nearly 9,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The diverse students and faculty members come from 31 states and 62 nations. The student-to-faculty member ratio is 20:1 and the average class size is 29.

The university offers more than 100 areas of study, opportunities to study abroad, 180 student organizations, 14 residential facilities, and 21 NCAA Division II athletic programs. The campus is located 20 miles from Allentown and Reading, 90 minutes from Philadelphia and 2 hours from New York City.

Comprehensive Degree Programs

Kutztown University comprises 4 colleges: Liberal Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, and Visual and Performing Arts. College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences awards bachelor's degrees in anthropology, biological sciences, chemistry, computer science, criminal justice, English, environmental science, geography, geology, German studies, history, marine science, mathematics, paralegal studies, philosophy, physics, political science, psychology, public administration, professional writing, sociology, social work, and Spanish. Recent highlights include KU's physics program being named to the Top 5 in the State of Pennsylvania, a $600,000 NSF grant for environmental and marine science scholarships and programs, two students received Neag Undergraduate Research Grants to further their studies in geology and computer science, and three students received the Department of Social Work Diversity Prize. KU is the only PA state university to offer a 5-year BS/MS program in computer science, and also offers a 5-year BSW/MSW program for social work. Other graduate programs offered through the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences include: Counseling, English, Professional Science Masters (PSM), and Public Administration (MPA).

College of Business

The College of Business offers two undergraduate degrees: a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, with tracks in accounting, finance, management, and marketing and a Bachelor of Leisure and Sport Studies. The BSBA program prepares students in the ever-changing world of business to become outstanding employees, managers, and leaders in industry, civic, and social organizations. The LSS major prepares students for administrative and operations positions in sport, athletic and recreation industries. 256.2 million Americans engage in some form of sporting activity creating an industry that generates revenue in excess of $160 billion annually and provides 1.9 million jobs. The LSS program has two distinctive concentrations, one in Coaching and Athletic Administration and the other for those wishing to pursue careers in the Fitness Industry. KU's Coaching Education Program is nationally accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Coaching Education (NCACE). KU's College of Business also offers a creative and flexible Master of Business Administration (MBA) program.

College of Education

The College of Education offers candidates to study and prepare for a career as lifelong learners in Elementary Education (grades Pre-K-4 or 4-8), Art, Music, Secondary Education, Special Education, Library Science, Instructional Technology and Counseling. Recent highlights include two students named as ambassadors for the Division on Visual Impairment for the National Council for Exceptional Children. KU is one of only four programs in the US that offer the major in special education with a focus on visual impairment. It also boasts one of the few clinically-based Reading Specialist programs. Teacher Education programs at Kutztown University are nationally accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Graduate programs offered through the College of Education include: Elementary Education, English as a Second Language, Instructional Technology, Library Science, Reading, School Counseling, Secondary Education, Student Affairs, and a Supervisory Certificate in Curriculum and Instruction.

College of Visual and Performing Arts

The College of Visual and Performing Arts awards Bachelor of Arts degrees in music, communication studies, and electronic media, as well as Bachelor of Science degrees in art education and music education. Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees are offered in communication design, crafts, and studio art with concentrations in digital media, drawing, painting, photography, print making, and sculpture. Students benefit from close proximity to vibrant arts communities in Philadelphia, New York City, and Baltimore/Washington, D.C. Visual arts and music programs are housed in the Sharadin Arts Building and the recently renovated Schaeffer Auditorium. Students wishing to pursue a graduate degree in Art Education or Communication Design at KU will benefit from instruction of some of America's best educators in the field.

Undergraduate Honors Program Provides Opportunities

KU's distinctive Honors Program challenges students in new and exciting ways, while offering unprecedented perks and privileges. Honors students access specialized courses, internships, and independent study programs. The Honors Program also offers a summer Honors Study Abroad program and scholarships.

Study Abroad

As an enhancement to coursework, KU students have the opportunity to study away from campus, both nationally and internationally, through more than 150 student exchange programs. KU participates in international studies programs where KU students can immerse themselves in the history and culture of England, Spain, Austria, China, Ecuador, or South Africa, just to name a few, all while maintaining a focused area of study and earning credits toward graduation.

Faculty Dedicated to the Classroom

At KU, faculty members are involved in important research and are leaders in their fields, but their primary focus is on classroom instruction. The majority of KU's 362 faculty members, 88%, hold the highest degrees in their fields. You won't find any graduate assistants teaching courses at KU.

KU participates in international studies programs with more than 75 study abroad programs. KU students can immerse themselves in the history and culture of England, Spain, Austria, China, Ecuador, or South Africa, just to name a few.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Tuition differs for full-time Pennsylvania residents and non-residents. Approximately 80% of KU students receive financial aid through grants, private and institutional scholarships, military officer training programs, on-campus part-time employment, and loans. Pennsylvania residents should file the FAFSA form by March 1 to receive the Pennsylvania state grant, and no later than May 1 for other types of aid. KU offers an out-of-state tuition reduction program, providing 20% and 40% discount for qualified students.
