Fast-growing Tope Ranking Christian University in Tennessee

Lee University in Cleveland, TN began an extended growth spurt nearly 30 years ago, when the 1200-student school decided to embrace the broader evangelical Christian community. Sponsored by the Church of God, Lee University now serves 5,000 students, with a corresponding growth in campus facilities and faculty members. The student-teacher ratio is just 17 : 1, and learners come from all 50 states and more than 50 countries.

Lee University has garnered national recognition for both academics and athletics.

The institution has been named a top tier Southern Comprehensive College by "U.S. News and World Report," and a Best Southern School by the "Princeton Review."

Lee has also been recognized for its 92% undergraduate participation in its study abroad programs, according to the Institute of International Education. Students pursue learning opportunities in countries such as Egypt, England, Germany, Russia, South America, and Israel.

Home to 10 Nationally Ranked Athletic Teams

In the area of athletics, Lee is home to 10 nationally ranked teams. Of note is the Lady Flames soccer team, which has won 4 consecutive NAIA National Championship titles. Currently making the transition from the NAIA to the NCAA Division II, Lee offers a variety of varsity sports for men and women, including baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross-country, fast-pitch softball, golf, soccer, tennis, track, and volleyball.

A Wide Variety of Liberal Arts Majors Available

For a small school, Lee University offers its students an outstanding number of academic options -- 55 majors across 4 schools.

The College of Arts and Sciences is home to 6 departments covering the spectrum of liberal arts subjects, including behavior and social sciences; business; communication arts; language and literature; history, political science, and humanities; and natural sciences and mathematics. Many majors offer teacher licensure.

College of Education Offers Numerous Specializations

The Helen DeVos College of Education comprises 2 departments which provide in-depth focus on numerous areas within the discipline of education.

The Department of Early Childhood, Elementary, and Special Education (ECESE) offers specializations in the areas of human development, early childhood education (PreK-3), interdisciplinary studies (elementary: K-6), middle grades education (4-8), special education (K-12), and special education/support services.

The Department of Health, Exercise Science, and Secondary Education (HESSE) offers specializations in athletic training; wellness education (dual license in health and physical education, K-12); health science/fitness/wellness; and physical education/recreation. Minors are available in fitness/wellness, physical education, recreation, and coaching.

School of Music Offers 5 Bachelor Options

The School of Music offers students 5 bachelor's options, each with program tracks in either vocal, instrumental, or keyboard specializations.

The Bachelor of Arts in Music degree program enables students to pursue liberal arts degrees with emphases in applied music. The Bachelor of Science in Music Business degree program, offered in cooperation with the Department of Business and the Department of Communication and the Arts, prepares students for careers as performers, managers, or entrepreneurs in the music business.

The Bachelor of Music Education degree program, offered in cooperation with the Helen DeVos College of Education, leads toward teacher licensure for the student pursuing a career in elementary or secondary schools. The Bachelor of Music in Church Music degree program builds practical skills to support the music minister in a local church setting. The Bachelor of Music in Performance degree program prepares students for study in performance at the graduate level, for performance careers, and/or for studio teaching.

School of Religion Fosters Spiritual and Intellectual Growth in Preparation for Ministry

The School of Religion hosts 2 departments that foster spiritual and intellectual growth in preparation for ministry.

The Department of Christian Ministries prepares students for entry-level work in ministries or further study in graduate or professional schools. Vocational options include children's ministry, discipleship ministry, pastoral ministry, and youth ministry.

The Department of Theology offers the "Bible and Theology" major with 2 tracks: a "Pre-Graduate Studies Emphasis" and a "Pastoral Studies Emphasis."

Recognized for Leadership in Preparing Students for Responsible Living

Lee has been recognized for its leadership in preparing students for responsible living and was included in the Honor Roll of Character-Building Colleges by the Templeton Foundation. As part of this preparation, the university emphasizes several overarching goals.

Lee's focus on global perspectives is supported in 2 ways: a required seminar course on cross-cultural issues and participation in extended, off-campus, cross-cultural experiences (through both international or domestic study opportunities).

Lee University is also committed to racial and ethnic diversity. As a result this commitment, the campus community includes about 12% of students who are members of U.S. minority groups -- separate from the more than 250 international students also at Lee.

Lee also emphasizes service. The Leonard Center oversees a comprehensive service learning program, required for all students, which includes extensive community service, a course on the biblical and theological foundations of benevolence, and guided student reflection on the service experiences.

Located in the Foothills of the Appalachian Mountains

Lee is situated on a 120-acre campus in Cleveland, Tennessee, a small metropolitan area in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in the southeastern part of the state. Chattanooga is less than 30 minutes away, while Knoxville is 90 minutes northeast and Atlanta is 2 hours south.
