Overview

Moravian College -- the 6th Oldest College in the Nation

Founded in 1742, Moravian College predates the American Revolution by more than a generation, and is the 6th oldest college in the nation. Today, Moravian is a co-educational, private liberal arts college on 2 campuses -- the Main Street Campus and the Pricilla Payne Hurd Campus -- located within 8 blocks of each other. College-owned transportation runs between the campuses.

Many campus buildings have been renovated in the last 2 years. A significant addition to the College's athletic facility, Johnston Hall, provides a complete fitness/wellness area. Comenius Hall, home to the social science departments, received a renovation to the first floor to provide for improved classroom spaces and more student study space. The student union (or HUB) was renovated to provide for new student dining and meeting space, and an outdoor patio with fire pit. A new residence hall, containing only single rooms in suite-style living, was opened in 2009. The Collier Hall of Science will undergo renovations in 2012 and 2013 to update building infrastructure and provide new, modern laboratory and student study space.

Moravian students benefit from what is called "the Moravian Effect." This added value from their Moravian experience is created through an emphasis on strong, personalized majors, hands-on learning opportunities, and encouragement of a deeper enjoyment of life -- all of which is encouraged and supported by engaged faculty and alumni. Surveys of graduates show that these qualities help them grow in four years into focused adults who succeed and excel in an increasingly challenging world.

Moravian College Top Rankings

Despite its established position within the community, Moravian College continues to innovate and excel. Their value and accomplishments have been recognized by many reputable sources. For instance, "The Princeton Review" has included Moravian on 3 of their recent superlative lists, including "The Complete Book of Colleges," "Best 376 Colleges," and "Best Northeastern Colleges." "Washington Monthly" ranked Moravian as one of the top liberal arts colleges in the country for their dedication to social mobility, research, and service. It has also been recognized as one of 170 "Colleges of Distinction" in the nation for undergraduate education, innovative learning experiences, and its active campus life.

"Bloomberg Business Week" has named the college among the top 25% of schools surveyed for their high return on investment. Moravian is consistently included in the prestigious "Barron's Best Buys in College Education."

Multidisciplinary Classes and Practical Internships

A scholarly and dedicated faculty reinforces Moravian's strong curriculum and personalized courses. The college boasts a student-faculty member ratio of 10 to 1. The Learning in Common component to the general education curriculum presents students with sets of courses in multidisciplinary clusters designed to complement each other and build connections among fields. Faculty and staff members provide personal attention and mentorship to students to help each student identify and prepare for the most appropriate career or post-graduate path for that student.

Field studies and internships also help students develop professional skills and build a network of professional contacts while still in school. Moravian students have completed field study placements at such prestigious organizations as AT&T Microelectronics, Merrill Lynch, Philadelphia Zoo, and St. Luke's Hospital. These connections and the exceptional work of the College's Career Services Center allows more than 93% of Moravian graduates to be employed full-time or attending graduate or professional school within 10 months of graduation.

Undergraduate Degree Programs from Moravian College

Moravian also offers several concentrated Bachelor of Music (BMus) programs through the departments of education and music.

Additional minor fields of study are available in Africana studies, international studies, medieval studies, and women's studies.

Student Life at Moravian

Campus life opportunities at Moravian College are designed to educate the whole person by promoting personal development, leadership skills, and global responsibility. Though the college is spread out onto 2 campuses, Moravian prides itself on having a close-knit community. On-campus housing is guaranteed for all 4 years of study, and fraternity and sorority housing is also available.

Student activities and campus cultural events provide opportunities to explore new interests and broaden students' experiences. The campus is home to over 80 student-led programs and Greek organizations, including the Equestrian Team, Beta Beta Beta, Moravian College Community Orchestra, and WRMC radio station.

Student Opportunities for Academic Research

In 1998, Moravian College founded the Student Opportunities for Academic Research (SOAR) program on campus. The program facilitates undergraduate student research in collaboration with a faculty mentor. Since then, the program has grown to support 20 to 25 students per summer. SOAR students receive stipends, travel allowances, and research expenses to support research in a variety of areas. Many students have presented their works at academic conferences across the region.

Additionally, independent study and honors research programs allow students to delve deeply into areas of personal interest. These opportunities also allow students to work closely with senior faculty members on research projects -- an unusual opportunity at the undergraduate level.

Financial Aid Opportunities at Moravian

Moravian College is committed to making education financially possible for all students. In fact, over 85% of students at Moravian receive some form of financial aid through grants, scholarships, loans, and part-time employment.

Moravian offers merit scholarships to students who demonstrate strong academic achievement, citizenship, and leadership skills. Scholarships are awarded at time of admission and every student who applies for admission is considered for a merit award. Generally, students should have academic and personal credentials that place them well above College averages for both grade-point-average and SAT scores. The Moravian College Heritage Grant is presented to first-generation college students, particularly those from diverse or underrepresented groups.

Located in Historic Bethlehem

Moravian College is located in historic Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and the Lehigh Valley. The college's 2 campuses are located at either end of a busy retail section of Main Street, on an area known as "the Moravian Mile." The area offers students an environment rich in history, culture, and outdoor recreation. Students may take frequent trips to Philadelphia, New York City, and the Pocono Mountains, all located within 75 minutes of campus.

The lively city of Bethlehem is known for its historic sites, dating back to before the Revolutionary War, art, craftsmanship, and music events. The annual 9-day Musikfest attracts over 1 million visitors each August. "Money Magazine" ranks Bethlehem as one of the "Top 100 Best Places to Live."
