Overview

A National Liberal Arts University with a Major International Presence

Long noted for the international dimensions of its curriculum, Ohio Wesleyan offers its 1850 students a multitude of opportunities to combine theory and practice in a global context. In Travel-Learning Courses, students travel with professors and classmates to get an "on-the-ground" perspective on the complex world issues they have rigorously researched in class. Students have studied poverty in Bangladesh, geothermal energy in Iceland, Alexander the Great in both Greece and Turkey, and climate change in Brazil, to name only a few. New courses are developed each year in virtually every discipline.

In addition, competitive Theory-to-Practice Grants fund individual or small-group original research, internships, service, and cultural immersion in nearly every country of the world. Students have studied in India, China, Brazil, Costa Rica, Pakistan, and other countries throughout the world, contributing to scholarship in widely disparate fields.

Traditional study-abroad opportunities also are available in 40 countries in programs sponsored by Ohio Wesleyan, the Great Lakes Colleges Association, and other organization.

Students themselves come to OWU from almost every state and nearly 60 countries, bringing a rich diversity to campus life.

Preparing Students for Life with Real-World Experiences

Ohio Wesleyan also offers abundant domestic programs that allow students to apply classroom theories to practical realities and open a new window on post-collegiate life. The university provides a limitless number of entry points into meaningful internships and apprenticeships, life-changing service trips, and professional research.

OWU participates in the Great Lakes Colleges Association's New York Arts program, which places students in apprenticeships in all phases of the arts, from creation/performance to management. The Wesleyan in Washington program gives students an up-close look at the legislative process as they work for elected officials and government program offices in Washington, D.C. The Philadelphia Center offers more than 1,000 internships and allows students to study, work, and live on their own in a major urban center.

The university's Summer Science Research Program is a ten-week intensive experience in which students, from first-years to rising seniors, work one-on-one with faculty on research projects of interest to both parties. Their faculty mentors then help students learn to present their findings at the Patricia Belt Conrades Summer Science Research Symposium on campus in Delaware and later at regional and national meetings of prestigious scientific societies. These real-life projects give OWU students the chance to meet leading scientists in their disciplines, build networks, and springboard into a scientific career or graduate program.

The Economics Management Fellows Program at Ohio Wesleyan University admits especially able first-year students with an interest in economics and business disciplines and gives them access to special classes and seminars, accelerated entry into required classes, alumni networking events, and a fully paid, faculty-escorted trip to New York to meet with experts in all aspects of economics and business.

A Multidisciplinary Approach

New Course Connections give students a way to study a topic of interest over time and from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. For example, one course studies food as biological fuel, a natural resource with problems of abundance and scarcity, a focus of celebration, a human obsession, a cultural expression, a multibillion dollar industry, and an interaction with the global environment. Courses are drawn from departments such as Botany/Microbiology, English, Geography, Health and Human Kinetics, Psychology, and Sociology/Anthropology. This way of teaching and learning deepens understanding, creates a new level of discourse between students and faculty, and develops sophisticated thinking and reasoning skills.

Ohio Wesleyan University Provides Outstanding Service Opportunities

Ohio Wesleyan's long history of service is a proud part of the university's heritage. Service Teams composed of students, faculty, and staff are an integral element of the Ohio Wesleyan University experience. Each year, students serve in locations ranging from Appalachia to New Orleans to the Lakota Nation to El Salvador to Rome--and beyond. For the past four consecutive years, the school has been on the Presidential Honor Roll for Community Service, with Distinction, and in 2009-2010, the University earned the President?s Award for Excellence in General Community Service, one of only three colleges in the country to be so honored that year. The University also boasts nearly 100 clubs and organizations, offering students multiple options for developing their leadership skills.

The Office of Community Service Learning helps match students with opportunities in local and regional agencies. One such project, the 20-year-old Columbus Initiative, pairs OWU student mentors with children in a Columbus, Ohio, public elementary school. Other community service opportunities in Delaware can include crisis intervention work, service in local government offices, animal protection projects, environmental programs, and many more.
