Overview

Point Park University: The Difference is Real-World

Point Park University is an innovative, private, coed university located in the heart of Downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1960, Point Park provides a creative environment for its students, and access to unique educational and professional opportunities by leveraging connections to business, entertainment and the arts in the region's urban center. Pittsburgh has a thriving cultural district and is home to Fortune 500 companies and many businesses, giving Point Park students access to exciting internships, activities and other opportunities. Point Park provides an affordable education that is reflected in the success of its graduates who serve their communities throughout the world.

Practical and Professional Academic Programs

Point Park offers approximately 50 undergraduate majors taught by professors with real-world experience, which is what sets it apart from other universities. In the School of Arts and Sciences, School of Business, School of Communication, and Conservatory of Performing Arts, imaginative faculty brings an innovative spirit and work experience to share, whether teaching biotechnology, business management, multimedia or dance. Unlike other schools, Point Park also immerses students in their major and hands-on opportunities starting their freshman year. Add in connections to take advantage of internships, and students are engaged in a more active, more real, more professional education than many of their peers at other schools. Students find a full range of majors, from traditional, such as education and journalism, to unique options, such as sports, arts and entertainment management, and animation and visual effects.

The Academic Village Adds to Point Park's Energy and Excitement

With the city of Pittsburgh as its campus, Point Park has an energy and excitement all its own. Magnifying this is the Academic Village, an initiative to create a multiblock living and learning hub as part of the University's vision to become one of the most dynamic private, urban universities in America. The most recent part of this vision to be realized is the Village Park, an outdoor park Downtown with a tree canopy, glass stair tower, dramatic water feature and outdoor cafe being enjoyed by students, faculty and staff as well as neighbors. The Academic Village is transforming the campus and redefining the student experience, campus life and the University's connection to the community. It represents Point Park's guiding principles: academic excellence, quality student experience, community engagement, and managed growth.

Student Life: Students Have to Work Hard to be Bored Here

Life on campus at Point Park offers students all the benefits of living in a world-class city with a small-town feel. Students live in one of five residence halls located Downtown. That means within walking distance is 36-acre Point State Park, three rivers, four professional sports stadiums, six professional theaters, more than 190 shops, 270 eateries and more than 5,000 businesses. More than a half-dozen, on-campus living and learning communities are also available for freshmen who desire to live with peers with similar interests, such as Art for Art's Sake, For the Record, and Global Perspectives..

There are also more than 40 student clubs and organizations on campus, intramural sports and 13 men's and women's varsity sports: baseball, basketball, golf, softball, soccer, track and field (beginning 2014), cross-country and volleyball. The Pioneers are part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), competing in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Real-World Education = Real-World Success

Students engage in a practical, career-oriented education at Point Park, inside and outside the classroom. With faculty members who have work experience and connections to industry professionals in their field of expertise, Point Park provides an advantage to students pursuing internships and job opportunities. Located in a city with Fortune 500 companies down the street, students also benefit from the advice and insights of guest speakers who are industry leaders, and make on-site visits to their companies to see them at work. This urban location also provides many opportunities for active, hands-on internships for students to broaden their skills and gain experience companies want. The University's Career Development Center also works with students throughout their four years to prepare them for turning their real-world education into a real-world career. Students build effective resumes, obtain interview skills, participate in networking opportunities and have access to a job search website among other tools. This dedication to career development ensures Point Park students and graduates have an edge in the job market as they launch their careers. Alumni have found success in virtually every field, from biological sciences to musical theater and from accounting to advertising and public relations.
