Shippensburg University Offers a High Level of Academic Quality, an Honors Program, and Internships

Ask Shippensburg University students why they selected this public university located in south central Pennsylvania, and most will say it's because of academic quality. The benefits of a Shippensburg education can be summed up in a few well-chosen words: talented professors, innovative courses, challenging programs, hands-on laboratories, and comfortable spaces for living and recreation.

Students have more than 75 options for programs of study, including recent additions that prepare students for careers in growing fields including nanofabrication, computer engineering, forensic science, geographic information systems, and supply chain management. At Shippensburg, students receive a liberal arts education with a strong emphasis on practice as well as theory. Internships are important to many programs and often lead to job offers.

Students find plenty of ways to put a personal spin on their education -- independent study, the honors program, and study abroad are just some examples. Ship students have recently studied in Spain, China, South Korea, and New Zealand. At Shippensburg University, undergraduate students can become involved in research with faculty, an opportunity many colleges and universities reserve for graduate students.

Performing Arts Center Enhances Shippensburg¿s Options for Entertainment and Recreation

For entertainment and recreation, Shippensburg University Student Services, Inc., manages a $3 million budget that supports a large variety of on-campus clubs and organizations including sports clubs, academic clubs, music groups, and fraternities and sororities. The H. Ric Luhrs Performing Arts Center features nationally acclaimed performers including Jeff Dunham, Marie Osmond, Willie Nelson, and Recycled Percussion. ShipRec, the student recreation center, boasts an 8,000-square-foot, two-story fitness center.




Shippensburg Competes and Excels in NCAA Division II Athletics and Intramural Sports

A member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and NCAA Division II, the university offers 18 intercollegiate sports (10 women's and 8 men's). There is also a variety of intramural and club sports including paintball, street hockey, tae kwon do, and Ultimate Frisbee.

Nine Housing Options and Living Facilities for Students at Shippensburg University

Freshmen are allowed to have a car on campus and are required to live in on-campus housing. Exemptions to this policy include those students who reside full-time in the home of their parents or legal guardians, those who are 21 years of age or older, and/or those who are legally married.

There are nine student housing facilities, all of which are co-ed. Rooms are double occupancy and have two high-speed computer connections. The Seavers Complex houses six students in each unit, while Stone Ridge Commons offers apartment-style living for two, four, or six students. Student safety is emphasized through trained supervisory personnel and a key-card entry system. In addition, all residence halls have sprinkler systems.

Shippensburg Offers the Resources Students Need to Ensure Success after Graduation

Shippensburg University has 7,200 undergraduate students, which provides the benefit of small classes with a student-faculty ratio of 20:1. More than 1,100 graduate students also attend Shippensburg, many earning advanced degrees part-time through evening courses on campus or at one of several satellite locations near their home or work. Shippensburg's Office of Extended Studies assists adult students with professional education needs.

Shippensburg University is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and many individual programs have earned national and international accreditation (business, chemistry, computer science, counseling, social work, and teacher education).
