Overview

Snow College - "Small Enough to Know You, Large Enough to Serve You"

Snow College is a state-supported 2-year community college located in central Utah, in the rural, high mountain valley of Ephraim. Founded in 1888, the 150-acre campus is an educational safe haven for 2,500 students, in a town of 3,500. Snow College prides itself on offering an affordable start to higher education, so that students have the opportunity to transfer directly to a 4-year university as juniors. The small school environment also allows students the opportunity to develop personal relationships with their instructors.

Snow College is located about 2 hours south of Salt Lake City and an hour south of Provo. The campus lies at an elevation of 5,500 feet, which is 1,000 feet higher than Salt Lake City, giving students easy access to camping, fishing, golf, mountain climbing, river rafting, and skiing.

Snow College International Program - Working with Students for Over 30 Years

International students have many reasons to choose Snow College, including small class size, personal interaction with professors, the safety of campus, proximity to outdoor activities, and some of the best housing costs in the country.

Since 1978, the International Center on campus has worked with faculty and staff, community agencies, and overseas institutions to develop a program that supports international students and offers opportunities for cultural education and academic success. The full-time international student adviser promotes student development through tutoring, counseling, advising sessions, and a series of international student activities. Students may also participate in activities such as group shopping trips, national park tours, and ski trips.

The Intensive English Program

The Intensive English program at Snow College has offered high-quality ESL classes to students for over 30 years. The program is designed to improve students' skills in the areas of listening, pronunciation, reading, speaking, and writing. Advanced courses also cover topics related to literature, American studies, and research or test taking skills - including TOEFL preparation. To successfully exit the ESL program and matriculate to full-time academic students, students must satisfy 3 criteria: achieve a minimum grade of B in all ESL courses, receive a minimum score of 65 on the Michigan Test of English Language Proficiency (MTELP), and receive a minimum score of 65 on the Oral Language Proficiency Interview (OLPI).

Courses are 8 weeks long and are divided into 4 levels for completion of the program. Students attend classes 5 days a week for around 5 hours per day, but the long hours also allow students without TOEFL scores to complete all 4 levels within 1 academic year. Courses taken within levels 3 and 4 count as elective credits toward graduation.

Teaching Second and Foreign Languages Major and Certificate

Snow College offers the Associate of Arts degree to students interested in teaching their primarily languages as second or foreign languages. Many students entering this vocation complete the Teaching as a Second or Foreign Language (TSFL) Certificate in conjunction with their degree. In addition to general education requirements for the A.A. degree, the TSFL curriculum includes a number of courses designed to give majors the optimum level of teaching and learning experience. A sample of courses in the TSFL major at Snow College includes Language Learning Strategies, Introduction to Language Systems, and Job Search Resources.

The TSFL Certificate is equivalent to a certificate in teaching English as a second or foreign language.

Associate's Degrees Available from Snow College

Snow College offers general education and beginning courses in over 50 academic disciplines, ranging from business management and practical nursing to theater and communications. All programs are designed to offer students a full and complete introduction to their areas of interest, while providing students with credits that are easily transferrable to a 4-year university.

Students interested in achieving an associate's degree while at Snow College may choose from among 5 degree options: Associate of Arts (A.A.), Associate of Science in Business (A.S.B.), Associate of Science (A.S.), Associate of Pre-engineering (A.P.E.), or Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.). Each degree requires students to complete an average of 63 credit hours, with 31 hours dedicated to general education. The A.A. degree also requires at least 8 credit hours taken in a foreign language.

Supported by an Experienced Faculty with Global Interests

The faculty and staff of the International Center at Snow College showcase a wide range of talents, experience, and interests. From desert explorers to a community development advocates, IC faculty members are committed to learning and development in all aspects of their lives.

Alex Peterson, Assistant Director of International Center, is himself a graduate of Snow College. In addition to achieving a master's degree from the School for International Training, Professor Peterson has lived abroad in Mexico and Malaysia, and speaks fluent Spanish. Peterson has been teaching in ESL programs for over 10 years in American high education institutions, in Mexico, and in Thailand.

Financial Aid Opportunities

The financial aid department at Snow College helps 75 percent of students to meet the expenses needed for their educations. International students may apply for academic or departmental scholarships. Snow College also offers leadership scholarships. Specific to international students, Snow College offers the International Student Endowment Scholarship.

On campus employment opportunities include work-study positions, as well as work-to-learn and hourly positions. Students issued I-20 forms to work on campus may not work more than 20 hours per week.
