Overview

Southern California Institute of Architecture -- SCI-ARC

SCI-Arc is a center of innovation and one of the nation's few independent architecture schools, offering undergraduate and graduate programs. The school is dedicated to educating architects who will imagine and shape the future.

Located in a quarter-mile long former freight depot in the Arts District in the heart of Los Angeles, SCI-Arc is distinguished by the vibrant atmosphere of its studios, providing students with a uniquely inspiring environment in which to study architecture.

An integral part of the emerging cultural hub of a city with a tradition of architectural experimentation, the school is devoted to finding radically new responses to the real needs and aspirations of today's world.

SCI-Arc offers students a unique experience as they pursue undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate degrees. The school's approximately 500 students and 80 faculty members -- most of whom are practicing architects -- work together in a fluid, non-hierarchical manner to re-think assumptions, create, explore and test the limits of architecture.

The school faculty examines everything about the built environment -- from design and materials to culture and experience.

SCI-Arc asks provocative questions to provoke new thinking and prompt new theoretical constructs.

The school hosts international leaders in creating the future of architecture; the school's students and faculty members come from throughout the world.

SCI-Arc invites the community into the school to take its classes and ideas into the community; it is a nonprofit cultural center that is woven into the fabric of Los Angeles.

The school creates designs that change how people interact with each other and their environment. It understands that the power to change lives is at its fingertips.

The Undergraduate Program

SCI-Arc's undergraduate degree is a 5-year, 10-semester professional Bachelor of Architecture (BArch). The BArch program integrates the development of knowledge of a wide range of conceptual and practical skills, from critical thinking to technical expertise, to create a fluid and holistic approach to the education of the up and coming contemporary architect. Throughout the program, emphasis is placed on the development of the individual student's personal growth, self reflection and knowledge of architectural design issues, including theoretical constructs and advancements in building technology, and ranging from applications of high-performance "intelligent" materials to considerations for sustainable practices. The undergraduate curriculum is built around an integrated sequence of design studios, Visual Studies, History and Theory, Media and Technology courses, into which interdisciplinary seminars in the Arts, Sciences, and Humanities are woven. Following the foundation and core sequence, upper-division courses are offered in Professional Practice and related subjects. Over five years of study, students become actively engaged in the discussion of the practice of architecture and are prepared to join the workforce.

The institute holds accreditation by the National Architecture Accrediting Board (NAAB) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) to offer the Bachelor of Architecture degree.
