Attractions, Cuisine, and Outdoor Recreation Plentiful in Utica, New York

Utica, New York, was formerly known as Old Fort Schuyler, the first settlement in the area. After it was ruined during the American Revolutionary War, Utica became known for its textile companies, and later as the "radio capital of the world." An educationally-rich community, Utica, New York, is host to SUNYIT, Utica College, Mohawk Valley Community College, and the Utica School of Commerce.

Students of SUNYIT enjoy attractions such as the Saranac Brewery Center, one of the nation's oldest breweries; Adirondack Park, featuring forest areas, ponds, and rivers; the Oneida Silver Factory; the Boilermaker 15K Road Race, one of the foremost 15K races in the U.S.; and Stanley Theater, which features live performances.

Utica, New York, is situated in the center of the state of New York and hosts the biggest area winter festival, known as Snowfari. Residents have easy access to an assortment of outdoor recreational activities at Utica Marsh (located just on the outskirts of the city), which is a distinctive urban wetland. As far as eateries, Utica, New York, is most famous for its Italian-American cuisine, although it also has a diverse range of restaurants for students of SUNYIT to enjoy, including Jamaican, Thai, Greek, Cuban, German, Chinese, and Bosnian.

Residents of Utica have ready access to Hancock Airport (Syracuse) and the Albany International Airport.

SUNYIT Is a School on the Rise

Also known as SUNYIT, the State University of New York Institute of Technology has been reinventing itself in recent years. With a new state-of-the-art field house being built, as well as a student center, advanced technology center, residence hall, and other construction around campus, enrollment has been going up, too.

SUNYIT's nearly 3,000 students enroll in graduate and undergraduate degree programs in liberal arts, professional studies, and technology on a campus that is geared towards a high-tech environment. The campus, hundreds of acres large, is only minutes away from the New York State Thruway, and students hail from all over the country as well as over 20 foreign nations.

Campus life is colorful and full of activities. The State University of New York Institute of Technology offers its students two residence halls, both offering the convenience and privacy of apartments in townhouse style accommodations. Students compete in NCAA Division III athletics in softball, bowling, golf, baseball, volleyball, swimming, soccer, cross-country, and basketball. There is also an assortment of intramural athletic leagues in which SUNYIT students can participate.

Students have great access to internships through the State University of New York Institute of Technology's close alliances with employers. Graduates of SUNYIT gain career placement in fields including communication, nursing, management, and computer science, and many more.

SUNYIT Study Abroad

Students of the State University of New York Institute of Technology have unique international opportunities to study, with many study abroad programs offered by the university. For students who participate in SUNYIT's study abroad, the world becomes their classroom. Students visit countries such as Greece and Brazil, and complete professional missions in fields including health care and social service.

These programs are meant to assist students and faculty in creating learning experiences outside of the classroom that are truly community-based. SUNYIT's study abroad program hopes to lead students in personal and intellectual growth as well as provide services to those in need throughout the country and world. Programs range in length from anywhere between a week to a year, and students who are accepted into SUNYIT study abroad will experience academically and culturally enriching activities and studies.
