The city of Detroit has been undergoing a transformation recently, with a goal of redeveloping the city and restoring it to world-class status. Detroit is diversifying its economy, with a number of local companies working on emerging technologies such as biotechnology, nanotechnology, information technology, and hydrogen fuel cell development.

For all its industry, Detroit is a very cosmopolitan city. Many of the Detroit area's prominent museums are located in the thriving, historic cultural district. Other cultural highlights include the Motown Historical Museum, the Tuskegee Airmen Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, the Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit, and the Belle Isle Conservatory.

Live music has been a big part of Detroit's nightlife since the late 1940s, and the area has many nationally prominent music venues. Live Nation hosts concerts throughout the area, and other concerts are held at DTE Energy Music Theatre and the Palace of Auburn Hills. Important music events include the Detroit International Jazz Festival, the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, the Motor City Music Conference, the Urban Organic Music Conference, the Concert of Colors, and the hip-hop Summer Jamz Festival.

Detroit is one of the few cities where you can watch all four major pro sports. Baseball's Tigers play at Comerica Park; the Pistons play basketball in suburban Auburn Hills at The Palace of Auburn Hills; the Lions play football at Ford Field; and the Red Wings play hockey at Joe Louis Arena.
