Location

Known as "Crossroads of the West" for its central position in the western portion of the United States, as well as the fact that the first intercontinental railroad went through the Salt Lake Valley, Salt Lake City is the state's political, economic, and cultural center. The city is internationally recognized as the location of the 2002 Winter Olympics and is known for its namesake, the Great Salt Lake.

Salt Lake City's economy is service-oriented. Major industries include government, trade, transportation, tourism, utilities, and professional and business services. In recent years, the city has developed a strong recreation industry and has become the nation's industrial banking center.

Salt Lake City has four distinct seasons, with long summers and winters; spring and fall serve as brief, comfortable transitions. The area offers a full range of outdoor recreational opportunities. The beauties of the mountain ranges surrounding the Great Salt Lake Valley are there to explore year-round. In the winter, students join local residents and visitors from around the globe who enjoy the slopes of the many nearby ski resorts. In other seasons, climbing, hiking, and biking are popular activities in the picturesque mountains.

The annual Utah Arts Festival draws 80,000 people to its more than 100 artist booths and five musical performance venues. Salt Lake City hosts parts of the famous Sundance Film Festival, the largest independent film festival in the United States. The city also hosts the international Salt Lake City Marathon.
