The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina - Overview

The Citadel Is The Military College of South Carolina

South Carolina Corps of Cadets - The Citadel, is a fully accredited, four-year, coeducational, comprehensive senior military college. It continually achieves excellence in the education of principled leaders. Citadel graduates are ready to handle the challenges of leadership whether in the military as commissioned officers or in the private sector.

The Corps of Cadets numbers approximately 2,000 young men and women and represents nearly every state in the U.S. and many other countries. All cadets are required to reside in the newly built barracks. The Krause Center for Leadership and Ethics at the Citadel plays an important role in the college's mission by preparing graduates to be principled leaders as they enter government, business, or the military or choose to go forward to pursue graduate and professional degrees.

Twenty Majors at The Citadel Lead to Bachelor's Degrees

Organized into five schools, the Citadel offers 20 majors and 26 minor areas of academic concentration. The Citadel provides a sound education reinforced by the best features of a disciplined environment.

Bachelor of Arts degrees are available in chemistry, criminal justice, English, history, mathematics, modern languages (French, German, and Spanish), political science, and psychology.

Bachelor of Science degrees are offered in biology, business administration, chemistry, civil engineering, computer science, education, electrical engineering, mathematics, physical education, and physics.

The educational requirements of all majors ensure that Citadel graduates are conversant with literature, history, and the natural and social sciences. Cadets learn to think critically by confronting the issues raised in challenging courses.

Study Abroad and Internship Opportunities Are Part of The Citadel's Programs

The Citadel's Office of International Studies offers a variety of study-abroad and internship opportunities for cadets who are interested in a semester or year abroad. In addition, the office coordinates Maymester and summer programs in cooperation with the college's academic departments. Maymester is offered as a three-week program in Ecuador. Summer study programs in France and Spain are for four weeks, while the London program is for six weeks.

Citadel Cadets Have Honors and ROTC Programs Available

The Citadel honors program is a specially designed educational experience that meets the needs of cadets with an outstanding record of academic achievement and a sense of intellectual adventure. While pursuing any one of the 20 degree programs offered at the Citadel, honors cadets take a series of honors-level general education courses concentrated in their first two years and an honors seminar in their third and fourth years.

All cadets participate in one of the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) programs - Army, Air Force, or Naval/Marine Corps. These programs do not require cadets to accept a commission or be committed to active duty.

NCAA Sports and Numerous Club and Intramural Sports Keep Cadets Busy

The Citadel is a member of NCAA Division I (football division I-AA) and the Southern Conference. The college fields 16 men's and women's intercollegiate athletic teams. In addition, cadets can take part in the almost 50 club and intramural sports programs that are offered. The Citadel has its own boating center with canoes, power boats, and sailboats available for cadet use.

Student Government at The Citadel Takes Shape Around the Regiment and Its Honor Code

Citadel cadets form a regiment, composed of a band and bagpipe unit, a ceremonial artillery unit, and 5 battalions of 19 companies. Student authority is entrusted to the regiment's chain of command. A principal aspect of student government and life is the honor code. Under that code, a cadet does not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.

The Citadel Is a Great School at a Great Price

The Citadel is the Number One Best Value among master's degree-granting colleges in the South, according to the 2010 Best College rankings released by "U.S. News & World Report." In the category of institutions that award up to a master's degree, the Citadel is the only public college in South Carolina - and one of two public institutions in the nation - recognized in the Great Schools, Great Prices category.
