Overview

University of Baltimore Enlivens Mount Vernon Cultural District with Uniqueness and Diversity

The University of Baltimore, one of Maryland's most respected universities, is located in the heart of the city's Mt. Vernon neighborhood. University students and faculty have easy access to the area's restaurants, museums, and cultural opportunities, including the Lyric Opera House, the Walters Art Museum, and the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. But the University of Baltimore is itself a highlight of this exciting district, with schools of liberal arts, business, and law that attract diverse students from around the country and the world. At UB there are countless ways for students to get involved on-campus and with the local community, and rapid infrastructure development is helping to make the university an even greater asset to the city of Baltimore.

Baltimore is a historic city, with some of the most stunning eighteenth century architecture in the nation. The University of Baltimore is an integral part of the city's rich heritage, having been founded in 1925 as a committed institution of higher learning. At the University of Baltimore, students are part of a tradition of diverse, exciting education with applications in the real world.

The University of Baltimore is Undergoing Innovative Changes to Expand in Every Area

By 2012, the University of Baltimore is expected to be home to 8,000 students, up from just fewer than 6,000 in 2008. The cause of this rapid expansion is a series of radical, visionary changes that the university is making. By 2012, UB will have doubled the size of its infrastructure, but this growth isn't just geared toward making room for more people. The university is adding a home for the Yale Gordon College of Liberal Arts, a new School of Law center, and new laboratories, offices, and technological improvements. Whatever their fields of study, University of Baltimore students will be able to find an intellectual home.

In addition to increasing its physical size, part of UB's plan for growth is to add unique new academic programs. Among these new paths of study are programs in digital entertainment, immigration law, and real estate and economic development. These programs are relevant to the world we live in today, and students who come to the University of Baltimore to study in these areas will graduate with knowledge in some of society's hottest and most pressing issues. The university is committed to the practical application of knowledge, and enlisting professors with experience in these innovative new fields will allow students to make the most of their education.

At other universities, these kinds of expansion programs might seem wasteful and self-serving. As an urban university, the University of Baltimore understands its responsibility to the people of Baltimore and to the environment. That's why the university is determined to become a leader in green expansion and sustainability. By reducing the university's carbon footprint, using sustainable construction methods, planting trees, promoting public transportation, and integrating issues of sustainability in the university curriculum, UB's growth programs will be good for everyone, from future students to future generations.

Practical Knowledge of Real-World Issues Begins with Practical Instruction in the College Classroom

In today's professional and economic climate, employers are looking for individuals with more than just a college degree. Many recent college graduates, after working hard to obtain degrees in their field, find that they are still unable to get the jobs they really want because they have no experience. The University of Baltimore is helping to make this a problem of the past.

By focusing on the application of knowledge, UB provides graduates with the experience they need to impress potential employers. In the School of Business and the School of Law, students work closely with professors who have real-world experience and expertise in their fields. Students also have the opportunity to contribute to journals and to participate in their chosen fields, gaining knowledge and experience while they are still studying.

The University of Baltimore's College of Liberal Arts is a pioneer in the study of applied liberal arts. In the liberal arts, practical knowledge that can be used in the real world sounds like a contradiction. Many liberal arts graduates never find a use for their hard-earned degrees.

Graduates of UB's Yale Gordon College of Liberal Arts, however, are equipped with skills and experience that can form the foundation of rewarding careers inside or outside of academia. At the University of Baltimore, theory and practice are integrated to help students become successful in the areas they are really interested in. Thanks to UB, the days of "useless" liberal arts degrees are gone.
