University of California at Merced -- The 1st American Research University of the 21st Century

Opened in 2005, the University of California at Merced is the 1st American research university founded in the 21st century, and a member of the prestigious UC system. The growing university is committed to the ideals of education, conservation, diversity, research, and public service. The university's multi-disciplinary academic and research programs are designed to encourage an entrepreneurial spirit and thirst for knowledge. UC Merced's 3 academic schools offer more than 40 majors and minors.

UC Merced is the only university in the U.S. in which every building on campus is environmentally certified. In addition, the university is pledged to a Triple Zero Commitment, a plan to consume zero net energy and produce zero landfill waste and zero net emissions by 2020.

School of Engineering Offers 5 Majors

The School of Engineering at UC Merced offers Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees in 5 majors: bioengineering, computer science and engineering, environmental engineering, materials science and engineering, and mechanical engineering. The curriculum emphasizes consideration of future societal needs and development of forward-thinking technologies.

Degree programs in engineering have been developed to offer strong foundational curricula and coursework, as well as ample hands-on experience. Service learning is an important part of the undergraduate experience in engineering.

School of Natural Sciences Offers 5 Majors

The academic and research programs of UC Merced's School of Natural Sciences create an environment for student achievement in cutting-edge research, academics, and public service. The school places a high priority on developing students' scientific literacy and training them to meet the global scientific challenges of the 21st century.

The School of Natural Sciences offers B.S. degree programs in 5 majors: applied mathematical sciences, biological sciences, chemical sciences, earth systems science, and physics.

10 Majors Available through the School of Social Sciences, Humanities, and Arts

UC Merced's School of Social Sciences, Humanities, and Arts (SSHA) is committed to the exploration of the human experience through innovative research, excellent teaching, and highly interdisciplinary studies. Graduates leave prepared for various roles as lifelong learners, informed citizens, and responsible leaders with global understanding.

SSHA offers a broad range of Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and B.S. programs through its integrative learning environment. The school offers 10 majors, including anthropology, cognitive science, economics, English, history, management, political science, psychology, sociology, and Spanish. An additional 4 non-degree programs are offered by SSHA: foreign languages, Global Arts Studies Program (GASP), Media Arts Technique Program (MAP), and world heritage.

Student Research at UC Merced

Students and faculty members at UC Merced conduct cross-disciplinary research in a wide range of fields, including renewable energy, water quality, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, and biomedical topics. Research programs are designed to push the frontiers of human knowledge to solve complex problems affecting the region, state, and beyond.

The university is home to 18 core laboratories, research centers and institutes, and multicampus research initiatives. For instance, the University of California Advanced Solar Technologies Institute (UC Solar) is a multi-campus research initiative headquartered at UC Merced. UC Solar conducts research and creates technologies designed to make solar energy systems more efficient and more affordable.

Eminent Faculty at UC Merced

The faculty members at UC Merced have come from some of the world's top-ranked institutions to build the university and share their talents and experience. For instance, Professor Michael Modest held positions at the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, and several prestigious universities before joining UC Merced. His awards and honors include the Premier Research Award from the Penn State Engineering Society, the Thermophysics Award from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and a ranking in the "Who's Who in the World."

Professor Asmeret Asefaw Berhe conducts research on soil science and global change science. By studying the changing environmental conditions on soil processes, she is working to explain the way land use affects climate.

Professor Lin Tian conducts National Science Foundation-funded research projects on quantum optomechanics, quantum simulation, and decoherence and noise models. Professor Tian also participated in the Frontier Lecture Series in Science and Technology.

The financial aid office at the University of California at Merced helps students identify available financial resources in the form of grants, loans, scholarships, and work-study programs. UC Merced scholarships recognize students for their academic merits, special talents, financial need, and additional criteria. For instance, Golden Bobcat Grants and Scholarships are needs-based funds awarded to a range of qualified undergraduate students at UC Merced.
