University of Indianapolis - Overview

Leading Midwest University Known for Health Sciences and Education

The University of Indianapolis, popularly known as UIndy, is a private, comprehensive and diverse institution of higher education located on nearly 70 acres just minutes from downtown Indianapolis. Affiliated with the United Methodist Church, UIndy is distinguished by highly respected undergraduate programs in teacher education, communications, and the health sciences; nationally ranked graduate programs; and Centers of Excellence focusing on aging studies and education reform. Personal attention, small, interactive classes, and flexible programming are the rule rather than the exception.

Founded in 1902, UIndy has a home campus of more than 5,200 students, a wholly owned branch in Athens, Greece, and partnership sites in Asia and Central America. The University of Indianapolis draws a higher percentage of international undergrads than all but 2 Hoosier universities -- bringing the world to Central Indiana.

UIndy is ranked among the top 25 percent of master's degree-granting institutions in the Midwest by "US News and World Report". In a national survey of college students, UIndy faculty members rank near the top in accessibility and helpfulness. Graduating seniors are more satisfied with their educational experiences than their counterparts at similar universities. The university's mission is to prepare its graduates for effective, responsible, and articulate membership in the complex societies in which they live and serve, and for excellence and leadership in their personal and professional lives.

Many Different Degree Options

UIndy offers 80 undergraduate academic programs, 25 master's degrees, and several doctoral programs -- one of the widest degree offerings among private colleges in Indiana.

The most popular programs in the undergraduate division include physical and occupational therapy, nursing, education, athletic training, psychology, business, communication, art, and music.

College of Health Sciences

UIndy's College of Health Sciences (CHS) is comprised of the Krannert School of Physical Therapy (KSPT) and the School of Occupational Therapy (OT). KSPT is one of only a handful of specialty schools in the nation providing a full range of physical therapy (PT) degrees from the associate to the doctoral level. The School of Occupational Therapy offers a Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) and post-professional master's and doctoral degrees in OT.

Both the PT and OT programs at UIndy are ranked among the best in the nation by "US News and World Report".

School of Nursing has Flexible Tracks

The Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) program is for students who wish to provide direct nursing care to patients of all ages with common health needs and problems. The ASN program prepares students for the UIndy Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program.

Advanced training programs include the Registered Nurse (RN) BSN track and the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program.

The school also offers an Accelerated Master's Program designed for career changers holding bachelor's degrees in other fields. Additional nursing certificates are available.

School of Business has 12 Majors

The UIndy School of Business offers excellent 4-year bachelor's degree programs and also a 2-year associate degree program in business administration or information systems. Students enrolled in 4-year bachelor's degree programs may choose from 13 majors.

In addition to the core business majors, students can major in entrepreneurship, global leadership, international business, sports marketing, and supply chain management.

School of Education

The UIndy School of Education is known not only for K-12 classroom teaching and school administration programs but also for leading exercise science, sports management, and athletic training majors.

All teacher education programs are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. Students may earn specialized licenses and certificates in special education, technology, and reading.

The athletic training education programs are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).

Exercise Science Program

Within the School of Education, the undergraduate exercise science curriculum features clinical and athletic specializations.

The program is unique because it is grounded strongly in basic science to prepare for graduate school or for advanced education and certification.

Students graduating with Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science degrees may take 2 important industry certifications: Health/Fitness Specialist (HFS) from the American College of Sports Medicine, or Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) from the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Premier Certified Athletic Trainer Program

The UIndy Athletic Training Education Program, accredited by the CAATE, has highly competitive admission standards.

Athletic training education students earn Bachelor of Science degrees and meet the CAATE requirements to take the Board of Certification Examinations to become certified athletic trainers (ATC).

College of Arts and Sciences

The UIndy College of Arts and Sciences includes programs in humanities, fine arts, and sciences. The college is organized into 16 departments, each offering multiple majors and minors. Among the most popular fields of study in the college are biology, art, communication, and music. The college also features a Pre-Medicine Program, a Pre-Law Program, and an Honors College.

Communication Program with Variety

Undergraduates take core classes in electronic media, journalism, and communication studies during the first year. Concentration areas include human communication, corporate communication, electronic media, journalism, public relations, and sports information. Students are immersed in courses that emphasize applied learning in video production, radio broadcasting, writing for print media, and public relations.

Music Department Offers World Class Performance Venue

Music Department students may earn Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degrees in music, with possible concentrations in jazz studies, music technology & recording, and theory/composition. Students may also earn Bachelor of Music degrees concentrating in music education, or music performance. Minors in music are also available.

The Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center is one of UIndy's signature buildings and features the Ruth Lilly Performance Hall. Its acoustical excellence has attracted national and international performers such as the Juilliard Quartet, trumpeter Randy Brecker, the London Chamber Orchestra, cellist Janos Starker, violinist Aaron Rosand, and pianist Olga Kern.

Setting Standards with Centers of Excellence

The university has developed 2 centers of excellence to set the standard in their disciplines: the Center for Aging and Community (CAC) and the Center for Excellence in Leadership of Learning (CELL).

CAC is one of Indiana's leading gerontology centers. It creates interdisciplinary solutions to improve quality of life for seniors. The center also offers a Master of Science in Gerontology degree and a Graduate Certificate in Gerontology.

CELL leads educational change to improve the skills and knowledge of high school graduates for better success in post-secondary education and in the 21st century economy.

International Student Support

UIndy currently welcomes students from more than 60 nations. The university provides a full complement of services for international students including specialized admissions processing, scholarships, orientation, visa advising, social and cultural programs, ethnic and religious organizations, and an intercultural association.

Living in the Indy City

Located in the heart of Indiana, Indianapolis is at the crossroads of America and is the 12th largest city in the nation. Cultural and entertainment venues, world-class museums, top-tier professional sports teams and venues, theater performances, major concert tours, parks, clubs, and cafes all add to the vibrancy of Indianapolis.
